﴾ About the news that comes up from within (naba'), the one whose weight has no seen edge (ʿaẓīm). ﴿
The same particle returns. ʿAmma held a preposition and the noun it governed; now the preposition is taken up again on its own at the head of the verse. The answer does not arrive with some new instrument that grips. It repeats the instrument that passes over.
ʿAn keeps the distance it set. A thing asked about with ʿan is circled, not placed in the hand. So the verse fills the noun-place that had gone short in ʿamma, and leaves the passing-over exactly as it was.
The break between the two verses does work of its own. One sentence is cut in two at the place where the breath is taken, so that the listener stands at the question before reaching what is asked about. The pause is itself part of the news.
Not every utterance is a naba'. The root n-b-ʾ is an emission out of an interior that opens and comes out, and then the coming-out is cut and set down all at once. So a naba' is word that has risen from a depth one cannot see, come out to whoever hears it, and landed in its place with an effect.
And for that reason naba' is not said of what passes over the ear and alters nothing. What works nothing in the one who hears it is speech; a naba' is what comes down and carries the state over with it.
And it arrives with the definite article: the news, not a news. A definite article points at something already known to those addressed, so the verse points and does not describe. What it pointed at stays in the listener's hand and not in the wording's, and the reading halts where the verse halted.
The root ʿ-ẓ-m is a grip that knits together in the depth, then an overlay that covers it and veils its edge, then a drawing-together into a single mass. So ʿaẓīm is not the large thing measured from outside. It is what is heavy in itself and whose rim is not visible.
And this is the only description the news is given here. It is not called true, or near, or awaited. It is called the one whose weight is veiled at its edge, and that is all that is said of it.
What has its edge veiled cannot be agreed upon by measuring, so each measures it by what he has in hand. That is why the verse after it does not name it either, but says of it ﴿الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ﴾, "the one inside which they stand turned away from one another." The description prepares what comes next: a weight with no rim produces a disagreement with no end.
So the noun-place that had gone short in ﴿عَمَّ﴾ is filled, and the particle that passes over is left exactly as it was: ʿan is taken up again and keeps the distance it set. Then what is asked about is named al-naba', and the root n-b-ʾ is an emission out of an interior that comes out and is then cut and lands: word that carries over the state of its hearer instead of passing across him. It comes with the definite article, so the verse points at something already known and does not describe it, and what is pointed at stays in the listener's hand. Then it is qualified by al-ʿaẓīm and by nothing else, and ʿ-ẓ-m is a grip in the depth covered by an overlay that veils its edge, then drawn together into one mass. So the verse names once and describes once, and withholds the identification both times. A weight whose rim is not seen, and a question still open after it has been answered.
The verse names once and describes once, and withholds identification both times. It fills the missing noun and keeps the particle that passes over; it points with a definite article at something the hearer already carries; and the single quality it grants is a weight whose rim is covered. A question answered, and still open.
