﴾ then the clotted blaze (al-jaḥīm), it is the place one withdraws into (al-maʾwā). ﴿
Here comes the fa that ammā had been waiting for. The part was opened with two descriptions across two verses and is now closed with a single predicate. The delay between the opening and the closing is a whole verse, so the description is taken in full before it is said what it comes to.
Inna fixes the predicate and presses it home. Then hiya comes between subject and predicate as a separating pronoun, and the work of a separating pronoun is restriction: the predicate is not one shelter among shelters, it is the shelter and no other. And the article on the predicate adds restriction to restriction.
This same word passed three verses back in another state: ﴿وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ﴾, "and it has been brought right out into the open, the clotted blaze, for whoever sees." There it was carried out into what has no cover; here it is made a place that one draws into. What was looked at from a distance becomes the standing-place one comes to.
The root j-ḥ-m is a clotting held in a narrow place where it rubs and takes light, then drawing together into a mass with no way through. So what is made a shelter here is built, in its root, upon holding and not upon room. A shelter is sought precisely because it contains, and this one contains.
The root ʾ-w-y is a hamza that cuts off from what was, then a wāw that ties a ring which contains without stopping up, then a yāʾ that draws out the stillness inside it. Three motions in one word: a severing, then a containing, then an extension with nothing in its structure to end it.
And the verb takes no object except through ilā, the particle of the end of a course and not the particle of place. So what the root names is the entering motion, not the residence achieved, and al-maʾwā on the mafʿal pattern is the place where that motion falls.
And the parting that the root requires has already happened in the two verses before it. Whoever swelled past his bound parted from the bound, and whoever put a thing in front and went on in its trace parted from what he left. So the name came fitted to what preceded it. No one is described by this shelter who has not first parted with something.
Here falls the fa that ammā had been waiting for, after two verses in which the description was taken in full before the judgment. Inna fixes the predicate, the separating pronoun hiya restricts it, and the article on al-maʾwā adds restriction to restriction: no shelter but this. What is judged is al-jaḥīm, the word that passed three verses back carried out into the open for whoever sees, so what is looked at from a distance becomes the standing-place one comes to. And its root, j-ḥ-m, is a clotting held in a narrow place that draws together into a mass with no way through: the place made a shelter is built on holding, not on room. Al-maʾwā, from ʾ-w-y: a cutting off from what was, then a ring that contains, then a stillness that extends with nothing in its structure to end it, its verb taking only ilā, so what is named is the entering motion. And the parting has already fallen in the two verses before: a bound parted from, and a thing left behind what was put in front. The name came fitted to what preceded it, and a ring that contains contains only one who came out of a ring before it.
