﴾ No self can die except by Allah's permission, as a writing deferred. Whoever desires the reward of the world, We give him from it, and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter, We give him from it. We will reward the grateful. ﴿
The conjunction attaches a ruling that joins onto the condition of death. "It was not for" denies that the movement of dying stands to any self on its own, and the preposition ties the infinitive clause to that self. The indefinite "a self" under negation takes in every self. Death, from m-w-t, is a stretch that lengthens and then ends in cutting and completion. "Except" confines its occurrence to Allah's permission. Permission, from ʾ-dh-n, is a release that penetrates in attachment and then holds within the hollow, so it carries the opening of a course for which leave has been given. No means is added, and death stays under the permission.
"A writing" comes in the accusative after the restriction, so it carries a fixed record bound to what came before. Writing, from k-t-b, is a retaining that holds a thing by a fine pressure and then joins it to its place, so that it clings to it. "Deferred" describes it, from ʾ-j-l: a release that enters a gathering and then extends to a limit, the doubled pattern carrying a sustained, repeated charge in the fixing of the term. The description establishes the deferral, while the text grants no date and no reckoning for what has been written; the term is a writing that does not slip out of its hour.
The conjunction begins a general condition with the instrument "whoever." Desire, from r-w-d, is an unbroken flowing that stretches on and then presses out penetrating toward its aim, so it carries an intent that seeks a direction. Its object is "the reward of the world." Reward, from th-w-b, is what leaves its place and goes on, then joins it again and holds to it, so it carries a counterpart returning to the one it belongs to, and the world is the direction annexed to it. The answer to the condition, "We give him," makes the majestic speaker the giver and the pronoun the one given to. "From it" is partitive, and its pronoun returns to the world, so nothing promises the whole of it: desire for the world finds some of its reward.
The conjunction repeats the very structure of the condition, keeping the verb of desire, the reward and the answer of giving in their order, while the term annexed becomes "the Hereafter." The Hereafter, from ʾ-kh-r, is a release that penetrates and then runs on unbroken, so it carries the direction that comes last. The pronoun of "from it" returns to this direction, and "from" stays partitive as it was in the first condition. The grammatical likeness prevents any mixing of the two things intended, and the verse describes neither reward nor its measure. In repeating, the structure keeps the balance and changes the direction.
The conjunction attaches the future verb "We will reward," adding the nūn of the majestic speaker to the sīn that marks what is to come. Recompense, from j-z-y, is a gathering that compresses in a channel and then extends to the one who acted. The object is "the grateful," from sh-k-r: a confining and gathering that keeps the effect and then sets its showing flowing. The active participle carries a nature continuously at work in gratitude. Repeating the promise of the preceding verse joins the refusal to turn back with the directing of desire, without making the grateful equal to every seeker of the reward named here.
The verse denies that a self dies except by Allah's permission, and it describes the matter as a writing deferred, with no date and no detail. It then builds two parallel conditions: whoever desires the reward of the world is given from it, and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter is given from it. In each of them "from" keeps the partitive and the pronoun keeps its referent, so the two directions are told apart and no seeker is promised the whole. The sīn closes with the promise of recompense for the grateful, gathering the permission, the writing, the desire and the giving under an agent from whom neither the self nor the reward stands apart.
