﴾ Muhammad is only a messenger. Messengers passed before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his heels will never harm Allah in anything, and Allah will reward the grateful. ﴿
The conjunction attaches a nominal sentence upon which negation and exception enter together: Muhammad is only a messenger. The name Muhammad is from ḥ-m-d, and the pattern on which the name is built carries an intensification of praise, while here it is the name spoken outright. "Messenger," from r-s-l, is a flowing that enters a precise channel and then fastens upon the one it is sent to; it is an active participle whose nature is continuously at work in delivering. The restriction establishes this description and summons no other life story behind it, and the errand keeps the human limit in place.
The particle qad realizes the past verb "passed," and the pronoun in "before him" returns to Muhammad. Passing, from kh-l-w, is a running penetration that fastens upon a place and then opens out away from it, so it carries a going through that leaves the place behind. The subject is "messengers," the plural of "messenger," and it establishes that this very description, which the opening confined to Muhammad, was already borne by messengers who passed before him, crossed, and were gone.
The interrogative, the consequence particle and "if" come together to build a condition whose result is laid before those addressed. Death, from m-w-t, is a closing shut in completion; killing, from q-t-l, is a knot in the depth that is cut, so that what was knotted to it slips loose. "Or" keeps both possibilities. The answer to the condition is itself a question about their turning back on their heels. Turning, from q-l-b, is a knotting that connects to another face, so it carries a reversal, and the heels, from ʿ-q-b, are ends that attach to what comes before them. So the question falls upon the movement of those addressed themselves: will you go back along the road you came by, making the hind end of your feet their front? In this the question separates the message from the survival of the one who bears it.
The conjunction attaches a general condition with the instrument "whoever," so the description fastens upon everyone who performs the turning, rather than upon a determined lineage. "His heels" singles out the picture of going back for every doer. The consequence particle brings an answer joining "never" to the present verb: he will never harm Allah in anything. Harm, from ḍ-r-r, is a heavy gathering that runs on, the repetition of the rāʾ fixing its attachment; the future negation, however, cuts off its arrival at Allah. "Anything" is an indefinite in a context of negation, so it exhausts the whole measure. Whoever turns back carries the effect of his own act, and Allah is not diminished by it.
The conjunction begins afresh with a future verb upon which the sīn has entered: He will reward. Recompense, from j-z-y, is a gathering that compresses in a channel and then extends to the one it belongs to, so it carries a counterpart that returns upon the act. The agent is Allah, and the object is "the grateful." In sh-k-r, an effect is kept within and its showing is then set flowing, and "the grateful" presents the bearers of that keeping and that showing. So the sīn opens their outcome as a reward set opposite the harm that turning back was denied.
Negation and exception confine Muhammad to the description spoken here, messenger, and then establish that messengers passed before him. On that footing the condition asks about the turning back of those addressed if he dies or is killed, and it makes going back on the heels an act that harms Allah in nothing. So the verse separates the continuing of response to the message from the survival of the one who bears it, and it rests that upon what came before, the passing of the messengers: a description that abides in the describing, and a bearer who goes on as those before him went on. Set opposite the turning back, the sīn opens the promise of reward for the grateful, the bearers of a nature continuously at work in keeping an effect and showing it.
