﴾ Allah is my Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) and your Rabb, so serve Him. This is a path standing straight. ﴿
The sentence opens with a particle of support, which keeps it from being one possibility among others, and the name of Allah is placed before the qualities, the pronouns and the commands. The verse begins with the Source to which the parts of the speech will order themselves, rather than with what those addressed do or with the rank of the one who speaks. This order sets the limit of the reading: the Sustaining that follows rests on the name established first, the service returns to it, and the path is named only once this relation is complete.
In "My Rabb and your Rabb" the word is repeated while its referent is not. Sustaining, from r-b-b, denotes a continuous current that binds itself to the one it carries, after which the doubled letter multiplies the attachment and the grip. The two pronouns preserve the difference between the one who speaks and those he addresses, yet they do not divide the Source. The one who speaks does not place himself outside the care to which he calls them: he says "my Rabb" before "your Rabb", and so is the first to enter under the name toward which he asks them to turn.
In "So serve Him" the connective is no ornament: it makes the command the consequence of what came before, since Allah is the Rabb of both sides. Service, from ʿ-b-d, is a coming to light out of the depth, which binds itself to its source and then settles under a discipline; it is entry into a standing role of service, not a word of belonging without an act. The singular pronoun of "serve Him" keeps the direction from scattering: the Rabb who gathered "my Rabb and your Rabb" is Himself the aim of the service. Knowing thereby becomes a practical undertaking rather than a motionless piece of information.
"This" comes after the statement and the command are complete; it takes hold of them together and points to them as a structure that is present, and then names that structure a path. The path, from ṣ-r-ṭ, is a firm closing that holds a course while it runs, then spreads it out into a heavy and visible passage. The path is therefore a course which the walker enters at the moment he joins the Sustaining to the service, not a landmark seen from afar. The pointing keeps belief and route together: what was laid down at the beginning of the verse is the very thing walked at its end.
In "standing straight", the standing, from q-w-m, is a knot that closes in the depth and holds from within what it has gathered, after which the structure stands firm and upright. "Standing straight" is an active participle, which makes the standing an acting and continuing nature within the path, not a fixed quality laid upon it from outside. The path carries its own line of standing within its structure and does not ask the walker to supply its straightness; the walker's part is to enter the course that "This" has gathered and the description has raised.
The verse builds the path before it names it. It establishes Allah first, then gathers the one who speaks and those he addresses under a single Sustaining without effacing the difference between the pronouns, and then ties the statement, through the connective, to a service that settles into a role and a charge. When it points to this whole order, it says: "This is a path". The path is the moving name for the unity of the Source, the direction and the act, rather than a new addition. "Standing straight", an active participle, then makes the path carry its own standing as a continuing nature: one Rabb, a service that belongs to Him, and a course that stands by what joins the first to the second.
