﴾ And confirming what is before me of the Tawrāt, and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you. I have come to you with a sign from your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), so guard yourselves before Allah and obey me. ﴿
The mission joins what stands in front of it. "Confirming," from ṣ-d-q, is a measured firmness that holds a correspondence tight at its joint. It is an active participle, so confirming is carried as a working nature that does not stop, and the tafʿīl form thickens it into a sustained, repeated charge. Its object is named plainly as what stands before him of the Tawrāt, and nothing new enters here stripped of its tie to what lies in front of it.
The opening here is bounded by "some." Lawfulness, from ḥ-l-l, is a held and living space whose attachment stretches, and stretches again, until the knot comes undone. Prohibition, from ḥ-r-m, is a living enclosure with a boundary running around it, gathered at the last into a cover that guards its refusal. The verse sets "some" between the act and what was withheld. The opening is confined to a portion of the circle of prohibition, and the portioning itself becomes the limit of the movement.
The Source returns before the outcome. The sentence that opened the verse before comes back: he has come to them with a sign from their Rabb. After confirming and after making lawful, that repetition keeps the mission from being credited to the person of its bearer as a thing standing apart. The sign comes from the Rabb who tends them, and it is out of this Source that the next result issues.
The connective joins the sign to the act it asks for, which is a guarding and a response. Guarding, from w-q-y, is a bond drawn tight at a barrier and then stretched out into a protection that keeps running. Obedience, from ṭ-w-ʿ, is a spreading that yields and runs with another along a bounded path, as a response. The first command faces Allah, and the second comes on the tongue of the messenger, "obey me"; the response is thereby set in order along the direction the verse itself has drawn.
The verse gathers confirming and change onto a single road, and they work within one limit: the one who confirms what stands before him is the same one who makes lawful, and his opening falls inside "some" of what was forbidden. What preceded stays the object of confirmation, and the new movement enters it under a stated limit; the tie carries the renewal, and the renewal keeps the tie that was announced before it.
Nor does the verse stop at showing what connects and what opens. "I have come to you with a sign" sets those addressed in front of a sign from their Rabb, and then asks for two movements that keep its direction: a guarding that raises its protection before Allah, and an obedience that answers the one who carries the sign. Because the Source is named before the two commands, obedience is not cut off from Allah, and guarding does not turn into a claim that refuses the channel through which the sign arrived.
The mission carries a connection and a bounded change: it confirms what stands before it of the Tawrāt, and it opens some of what was forbidden, not all of it. Then it returns to the source of the sign, "from your Rabb," and the connective ties that source to the outcome: a guarding before Allah and an obedience toward the messenger. Confirming, making lawful and the sign ask for a direction of work, rather than staying as pieces of information.
