Reflection
The Qur'an names sparingly, and the name it gives Abū Lahab is the one he chose for himself
The Qur'an almost never names a contemporary opponent of the Prophet. It names prophets, peoples, angels, but withholds the proper names of those who opposed the Message in their own day. Abū Lahab is the single exception. And the name given is not his birth name but his self-chosen kunya, the epithet its bearer wore. This is structural: the verdict falls on the name he chose, not the name he was given.
Trace the few named figures in the Mushaf and a pattern emerges: Maryam (the mother whose dignity her people deny, whom the text affirms), Zayd (the adopted son whose status needs correcting), Abū Lahab (the opponent whose chosen name turns against him). Each naming is a structural act, not a historical note. The Qur'an names where naming carries weight, and leaves the rest described.
The hand precedes its owner, a law recurring across the Mushaf
The hands come before the man in the verse: tabbat yadāhu (his hands withered) before tabba (he withered). This precedence echoes through the Mushaf: ﴿بِما قَدَّمَت أَيديكُم﴾ (3:182, "by what your hands have sent ahead"), ﴿فَوَيلٌ لَهُم مِمَّا كَتَبَت أَيديهِم﴾ (2:79, "woe to them for what their hands have written"), ﴿وَلا تُلقوا بِأَيديكُم إِلى التَّهلُكَة﴾ (2:195, "do not cast yourselves with your own hands into ruin"). A person is judged by what is in his hand before he is judged in his person.
On the Day of Reckoning the limbs speak before the self: ﴿اليَومَ نَختِمُ عَلى أَفواهِهِم وَتُكَلِّمُنا أَيديهِم﴾ (36:65, "today We seal their mouths, and their hands speak to Us"). The hand is the witness against its owner. The Surah here gives the same scene compressed: the hands did not speak, they withered. The drying preceded the speech; the speech will come in its day. The root reveals the law: what a hand earns descends on its owner before descending on anyone else.
Doubling the root closes off the softening reading
Tabbat...wa-tabba, one root repeated in two forms. This is a Qur'anic device used precisely when the text is closing the door on any softening interpretation. The same root said twice on the same beat does what ten different intensifiers cannot. The reflective lesson: when the Qur'an presents a verdict and then re-presents its root, the verdict is sealed against the moderating gloss.
