Commentary
The lowering, ikhfiḍ from kh-f-ḍ, is the bringing down of what stands high until it spreads out flat, and nothing is lowered that was not high. So the command is in itself a quiet granting that something has risen.
The verse demands that you bring down what has grown large, not that you be small, and that is the heavier thing. Whoever has not risen has nothing to lower.
"For them" was put before the object: whom the lowering is for comes to be known before what is lowered. The lām is the lām of purpose, and the direction comes before the instrument.
The wing, janāḥ from j-n-ḥ, is a mass that covers what is beneath it and then leans its bearer to one side. From the same root comes janaḥa, "he inclined", so the wing is the limb by which a body is made to lean: the name of the instrument of leaning, not a figure for gentleness.
The term dhull, from dh-l-l, denotes a softness by which a thing goes along with whoever has taken hold of it. From it come the dhalūl mount that is led without struggle, the dhalūl ground that is level and easy to walk, and the cluster of dates made dhalūl when it is brought down within reach of the picker. The root carries no belittling of its bearer; it carries a going along that makes the taker's hold possible.
The construction is a genitive, not an epithet: "the wing of tractableness" is a wing that this softness owns. The verse speaks of a wing whose master the softness has become, so that the softness directs it, not of "a lowly wing". What is asked for is the limb of leaning at the hour it goes along, not at the hour it resists.
The verse says "out of mercy", not "with mercy", which would make the description an instrument: out of mercy the lowering comes. The preposition min here begins an origin, naming the wellspring, not the means.
This overturns the order the doer supposes. It seems to him that the lowering bequeaths the mercy, whereas the verse says that the mercy is what brings the wing down; a wing lowered out of anything else is a heavy wing, carried and then set down.
The first of the verse is a deed of the body, and the last of it a saying of the tongue. The speech commanded is not directed to them; they are absent inside it: "have mercy on them". The wing is lowered for them, and the asking is about them.
"My Rabb" is a call by one of the names; the verse did not say Allāhumma, nor any name besides it. It gives the ground of its choice in the word that follows.
"They reared me" is from r-b-b, the root from which the call came two words before it. So the one asking calls by the name whose sense the two parents enacted: they did in the small one what the root names, and now the One whose name is that root is asked to do for them.
The word "as" likens in manner, not in cause. The verse did not say "because they reared me", which would make the request a matching and the collection of a debt; it said "as": on the pattern by which they reared me. A mercy is asked for with a likeness held up, not with a claim submitted.
"Small" is the state of the speaker, not of the two. He did not say "as they reared me, they being aged", nor did he describe their condition today; the One asked is measured by the state of the asker on the day he owned nothing. Whoever asks by the Rabb for the one who reared him has returned the act to the name of the first one who did it.
The command is a lowering, not a smallness, so it presupposes a standing height and demands that it be brought down, and the direction ("for them") is named before the instrument. The instrument is the very limb of leaning: a wing that covers what is beneath it and leans its bearer, annexed to a softness by which the one taken goes along with the one who takes, not to a belittling that attaches to its bearer. Then min names the wellspring and makes plain that mercy is what brings the wing down, not the wing what bequeaths the mercy. The command then moves from the body to the tongue, and from addressing the two of them to asking about them, and the name chosen for the call is the root of their own act: they reared, so the Rabb is called. The word "as" likens in manner, not in cause, so the request does not become the collection of a debt, and the One asked is measured by the state of the asker as a small child, not by their state as aged. The wing is lowered by hand, and the debt no body discharges is handed over to the One named with the name of the act.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"The wing of dhull" is read as a well-known likeness: a bird lowers its wing over its young, and so the child lowers his wing to his parents. Dhull is glossed as humility, meekness, softness of manner, and the possessive construction is taken as intensifying the self-abasement. "Out of mercy" is usually rendered "in mercy toward them" or "for mercy's sake." The prayer at the end is read as repayment for the rearing, a returning of kindness.
A reading that builds the image on the bird likeness and hears the prayer as recompense.
A root-reading
Ikhfiḍ (root kh-f-ḍ) is the bringing down of what stands high until it spreads, so the command presupposes something raised. Janāḥ (root j-n-ḥ) is the organ of leaning that covers what is under it, and from the same root janaḥa, "he inclined." Dhull (root dh-l-l) is a pliancy by which the taken yields to its taker, as in the tractable mount and the easy ground, not a debasement fastened on its bearer. The construction is a possessive, not an adjective: a wing that this softness owns. Min marks the point of origin, so mercy brings the wing down and is not milked from it. "My Rabb, have mercy on them" asks about them rather than addressing them; rabbayānī is from r-b-b, the root of the very name called on; kamā compares manner and not cause; and "small" is the state of the asker, not of the two.
A reading that takes the image from the two roots and from the particle "out of," and hears the prayer as a handing-over rather than a settlement.
The two readings do not conflict. The first brings the image near through a familiar scene; the second hears, in the two roots, the leaning limb and the pliancy that lets a hand take hold. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

The first command in the verse presupposes what it does not state. "Lower" is not said to one who never rose, so the address is aimed at a stature that has come to its full growth. Had smallness been wanted, it would have said: be small. It says: bring down what has grown. The weight of the command is that it can be asked only of someone who owns something to lower.
Then the direction is put before the instrument: "for them" before "the wing of tractableness." Then the source is named: "out of mercy," and not with it. So the order of the words reverses the order a doer assumes: lowering does not produce mercy; mercy brings the wing down. A wing lowered from any other source is a weight carried and then set down.
Then the command moves from the body to the tongue, and the pronoun moves with it. The wing is lowered for them while they are present; then the asking is about them while they are absent: "have mercy on them." And the measure named at the close is the state of the asker, not theirs: "as they reared me when I was small." Nothing is said of what they have become; what is said is what he was on the day he owned nothing. What a hand can reach is done by hand, and what it cannot reach is handed to the One whose name is the name of the act.
Perhaps there is something to be heard in the choice of that measure. The smallness the request is weighed against is a state its owner does not keep: it may be that the helplessness of the human newborn is the longest known among living things, and that its beginning is the least of it left in anyone's memory. That may account for why neither their condition nor their age is mentioned: the comparison is drawn from a record the asker did not write and cannot consult. And perhaps there is a second listening in the placing of the lowering before the speech. The point at which the care of children most often fails, in much of what is known of how people live, is the point at which strength turns over and the one who was reared becomes stronger than those who reared him; and that is the very point before which no lowering is possible. This is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse named a lowering, a source, a prayer and a likeness of manner, and it settled nothing about the ages of bodies or the customs of any people.
