﴾ And thus have We sent it down, a gathered recitation made plain in Arabic, and We have turned about within it some of the threatened word, that they might guard themselves, or that it might bring about in them a remembering. ﴿
The verse opens with a particle of likeness followed by a demonstrative for the far. What the likeness points to is given no word of its own, so the comparison is referred back to what has passed without being fixed upon any part of it.
A past verb follows in the plural of majesty, with a pronoun joined to it. The pronoun refers to what has not yet been named, and its naming comes afterward, as a circumstantial accusative set down after the verb.
That accusative is "a recitation." A recitation, in q-r-ʾ, is the gathering of what is scattered and then its issuing, cut off and made distinct in the uttering: a gathered thing that is spoken, not a sheet that is folded away.
The second description is a relation to what makes plain. The root ʿ-r-b denotes the bringing out of what lies in the depth, running and manifest; from it a man is said to have aʿraba what was in himself, that is, to have brought it into the open.
So the description says that the gathered thing came out in a tongue that makes plain. The verse contains no setting of that tongue against another tongue, and no preferring of one over another.
To read into the description a verdict upon tongues is to add to the verse what is not in it. What it does contain is that what came down came down plain, and that this plainness is the condition of the guarding and the remembering asked for after it.
The verb of turning follows, on the intensive pattern of repetition; its root, ṣ-r-f, is a thing held fast that is turned about so that its faces come apart one after another. The act is the turning of a single thing, not the multiplying of many.
This verb has stood twice before this place in that same plural of majesty, and on both occasions what was turned about went unsaid: once the object was dropped altogether, and once it was left indefinite, "of every likeness."
Here alone is it named, ﴿مِنَ الْوَعِيدِ﴾, the Surah giving the verb an object it had not been given before.
Even in the naming the preposition divides: some of the threatened word, not the whole of it. What is turned about is a part out of a whole class, not that class entire.
The threatened word derives from w-ʿ-d, a binding that knots in the inward and then holds fast. What is knotted from this root upon something unwelcome and still to come is tied before its hour is present.
The verb had stood twice before this and ended both times in a withholding, ﴿إِلَّا نُفُورًا﴾ and then ﴿إِلَّا كُفُورًا﴾: an exception after a negation, in both places.
Here the ending turns over. In place of an exception and a negation comes a particle of hope, and then two purposes joined by "or."
That particle yields no certainty: the purpose is hoped for, not decided upon, and this is read without being pressed.
The first purpose, that they guard themselves, is on the reflexive pattern, meaning that they take for themselves a guard by themselves. Guarding, in w-q-y, is an encompassing that tightens and so keeps off; what is asked for is a screen they set up, not a feeling that falls upon them.
The second purpose, "that it might bring about," is a verb with no visible doer. In it the act is done for them, and they are not the ones who act, as the words "in them" show.
So the two purposes are not two degrees of one thing: the first is their own making and the second falls upon them, and the particle set between them divides rather than gathers.
The verb of that second purpose is from ḥ-d-th: a thing that takes its shape after not having been, and is then spread abroad and carried on. This is the material with which the long account in this Surah was opened, ﴿حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰ﴾.
The door was opened with a noun from this material, and in this verse a verb from it is what is hoped for: what was carried as a report is meant to become an event falling inside the one who hears.
A remembering is from dh-k-r: a penetration kept in the inward and then returned to the outward. So what is hoped for is the bringing about of what is kept and returned, not a bare hearing that passes.
It stands indefinite in the accusative, with no description and no annexation, and what it is a remembering of is left unsaid.

Ici seulement il est nommé : ﴿مِنَ الْوَعِيدِ﴾.
