﴾ And whoever works some of the mending deeds while he is one who trusts, he fears neither a wrong laid upon him nor a docking of what is his. ﴿
The verse opens with a conditional pronoun governing the jussive, and the verb of the condition after it is an imperfect in that mood. So the ruling is general, taking in everyone who enters it, and no one in it is named.
The wording is not "he works the mending deeds," with the verb reaching its object directly: a partitive particle has entered, so what is worked became a part, not a whole.
This particle is to be read, not passed over. What is stipulated is work of a kind, not the exhausting of the whole kind.
Work, in ʿ-m-l, is an effort that comes out of the depth and fastens onto a trace that holds it. So it stays hung on the one who worked it and does not end at the motion.
The deeds named are from ṣ-l-ḥ: a binding grip that contains what it has bound. The description falls on what draws tight what had come apart, not on what looks well to the eye and passes.
The connective is the connective of circumstance, and the clause after it is nominal, so the description stands at the very time of the work.
Had it been made a second condition by conjunction, it would have become an event coming before or coming after; a circumstance neither precedes nor follows: it accompanies.
The noun is singular and indefinite, an active participle rather than a verb: what is mentioned is a description that stands, not an event that happened once.
Safety, in ʾ-m-n, is the gathering of a thing to its centre, a gathering that holds fast, and then a stillness sent out from it to what is around. So the description sits in its proper place in this verse: the one in that stillness is the one of whom the very next words state that he does not fear.
The answer to the condition is a clause tied on by the connective particle, and its verb is an imperfect in the indicative, denoting a state that continues. What is denied is the fear itself, not its cause.
Fear, in kh-w-f, is a hollowness that stretches through the one it takes and breaks up his holding-together. So what is denied is the coming-apart of resolve, not the thing that is expected.
Two things are then denied, not one, and the particle of negation is repeated with the second: "nor a docking of what is his." The repetition separates the second from the first, so that the two are not read as two words for one meaning.
A wrong, from ẓ-l-m, is a covering that closes over a thing, takes hold of it and holds it within; so here it is that something not his be laid upon him.
A docking, from h-ḍ-m, is a breaking under pressure until what is broken goes off into something else and is diminished. So it is the taking from him of something that is his.
So the two sides face each other, an addition carried onto him and a subtraction taken out of him; between them falls everything that is feared where recompense is settled, and so both ends were denied together.
In the verse before this one there stood ﴿وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ حَمَلَ ظُلْمًا﴾: an indefinite accusative carried by a man who is not named.
Here it is an indefinite accusative not feared by a man who is not named. The word is one and its grammatical place is one; only the verb that falls upon it changes.
In the first it was carried and hollowed out the one who carried it; in the second it was not feared and did not reach the one who did not fear it. Whoever carried the film met it, while whoever worked what draws tight did not meet it.
The verse sets a general condition that names no one, then a verb not made to reach its object directly: a partitive particle has entered, so what is stipulated is work of a kind, not the exhausting of the whole kind. Work, in ʿ-m-l, is an effort that comes out of the depth and fastens onto a trace that holds it, and the mending deeds, from ṣ-l-ḥ, are a binding grip that contains what it bound, so what is described is what draws tight what had come apart. A nominal clause follows with the connective of circumstance, not a second condition joined on: the description accompanies the work at its own time, neither preceding it nor following it, and it is a standing participle, not an event that happened. Safety, in ʾ-m-n, is the gathering of a thing to its centre and then the sending out of a stillness from it, so the one in that stillness is the one of whom the words that follow state that he does not fear. The answer denies the fear itself; fear, in kh-w-f, is a hollowness that stretches through the one it takes and breaks up his holding-together, so what is denied is the coming-apart of resolve, not the thing expected. Two denials follow, with the negative repeated before the second so that the two are not read as two words for one meaning: a wrong is a covering that closes over a thing, takes hold of it and holds it within, and here it is that something not his be laid upon him; a docking is a breaking under pressure that carries the broken off into something else, and it is that something of his be taken from him. An addition is carried and a subtraction taken, and between them lies everything that is feared where recompense is settled. As for the wrong, it is an indefinite accusative in two adjacent verses: in the first it was carried and hollowed out the one who carried it, and in the second it was not feared and did not reach the one who did not fear it.
À la ligne qui précède celle-ci se tenait ﴿وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ حَمَلَ ظُلْمًا﴾ : un accusatif indéterminé porté par un homme qui n'est pas nommé.
