﴾ So Allah is high above, the Sovereign, the Real. And do not hurry with the recitation before its sending has been carried through to you, and say: my Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), add to me in knowledge. ﴿
The verse opens with a particle of sequence following upon what came before, then a verb on the pattern that turns back upon its own doer. The pattern returns the act to the one who does it, so the height stands in Him and does not befall Him from another.
The root ʿ-l-w is a rising that comes up out of a depth and is then joined to what it has reached, and settles there. This root has run through the Surah in differing standings before this place: one man sought it and did not attain it, and it was said of one who never sought it.
Two names then follow the name Allah, with no conjunction joining them: the Sovereign, then the Real. A pairing of this same kind came three verses earlier in this passage, two names for one described with nothing joining them.
Sovereignty, in m-l-k, is an encompassing that closes upon itself and then keeps in what it has taken. The real, in ḥ-q-q, is a containing within a narrow upon which a separating cut passes judgment. The first states the breadth of the holding, the second the firmness of the standing.
A prohibition addressed to a single man follows. In the verse before this one the address concerned absent ones for whom something was hoped; here it is directed to one man who is forbidden.
Hurrying, in ʿ-j-l, is a coming out that breaks from a depth before its preparing is complete, and then runs on. What is forbidden is the manner of the coming out, not the coming out itself.
The verb is made transitive by the particle of accompaniment, "with the recitation." The prohibition falls upon hurrying that keeps the recitation company, not upon the recitation, nor upon reciting it.
The prohibition is bounded in time: the word "before" shows that what lies past the bound falls outside it. What is barred is the running ahead, not the act.
The verb of carrying through is built with its doer unnamed, and the verse does not name who carries the sending through.
It is made transitive by "to you," not by "upon you." The completing comes through to him as to an end, and is not set down upon him as a load.
Sending, in w-ḥ-y, is a conveying through a narrow and covered passage that runs softly. What is waited for is the completing of what runs in a narrow, and whoever hurries what runs in a narrow cuts it.
The words are "and say," rather than "and seek" or "and ask," so what is commanded is an utterance in these very words.
The particle of calling is then dropped, and the one called upon is left annexed to a pronoun of the speaker that is itself dropped: my Rabb. This is a calling in the shortest form in which it can be said.
An imperative with two objects follows. Adding, in z-y-d, is the joining of one thing to another until it holds in it and is counted as part of it, so what is asked for comes upon a base that already stands and is no substitute for it.
In the corpus published in this book there is no second increase whose asking is commanded of the one addressed. One place says to an addressee that he should ask for more, and what he asks for is knowledge.
Stranger still, the prohibition and the command stand in one verse: he is forbidden to hurry with what comes down, and commanded to ask for an increase in what is known. Hastening is not to be asked for while increase is, the difference between them being that the first runs ahead and the second follows after.
This noun has come in the accusative three times in this Surah, in places close to one another. It was first affirmed: ﴿
It was then denied: ﴿وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِهِ عِلْمًا﴾. An encompassing was affirmed and then an encompassing denied, while the specifying accusative in both is one and the same.
Here it comes a third time, asked for, and neither affirmed nor denied. What encompassed every thing with One, and was not encompassed by a company, is now what one man is commanded to ask more of.
Knowledge, in ʿ-l-m, is a mark that stands out and so distinguishes a thing, and then stays with whoever has taken it. What is asked for is the holding of the differentiating mark, not an abundance of report.
A man in this Surah was asked a question of reproach, ﴿وَمَا أَعْجَلَكَ عَن قَوْمِكَ﴾, and he answered by owning the act itself: ﴿وَعَجِلْتُ إِلَيْكَ﴾.
Here another addressee is forbidden that same material: a question put to one and a prohibition laid on one, with the material one and the same.
The difference lies in what it attaches to: there he hurried to his Rabb and left his people, and here the hurrying forbidden is with what comes down upon him. The parallel is read, and no verdict upon either of the two is built upon it.
The verse opens with a particle of sequence upon what came before, then a verb on a pattern that returns the act to its own doer, so the height stands in Him and does not befall Him from another; the root ʿ-l-w is the one that has run through this Surah in standings where one man sought it and did not attain it and where it was said of one who never sought it. A prohibition to a single man comes next, and it falls upon hurrying, not upon the recitation; hurrying, in ʿ-j-l, is a coming out that breaks before its preparing is complete, and the particle of accompaniment shows that what is forbidden is hurrying keeping it company, not the act itself, while the word "before" bounds the prohibition with a time that ends. The doer in the verb of carrying through is not named, and the verb is made transitive by "to you," not by "upon you": a completing that comes through to him, not a load set down upon him. Sending, in w-ḥ-y, is a conveying through a narrow passage that runs softly, and whoever hurries what runs in a narrow cuts it. There follow a command to say in these very words, not to seek at large, and a calling in its shortest form, then an imperative and two objects. Adding, in z-y-d, is the joining of one thing to another until it holds and is counted as part of it, so what is asked for comes upon a base that already stands and is no substitute for it; in the corpus published in this book there is no second increase whose asking is commanded of the one addressed, and what is asked for in this one is knowledge. The prohibition and the command stand in one verse: what comes down is not to be hurried and what is known is to be asked for in more, the difference being that the first runs ahead and the second follows after. Knowledge is the third accusative of this material in the Surah, in places close together, affirmed with One, then denied of a company, then asked for here; knowledge, in ʿ-l-m, is a mark that stands out and distinguishes and then stays with whoever takes it. As for the material that is forbidden, a man in this Surah was asked about it in a question of reproach and owned it, and here another addressee is forbidden it: a question to one and a prohibition to one, and what the material attaches to differs.
