﴾ And that you will not thirst there, and that you will not stand out under the sun. ﴿
The verse opens with a conjunction and then the particle with the open first vowel. The one with the open vowel is bound with what follows it into a verbal noun, so it is joined to the verbal noun that stood as the subject of the emphatic particle in the verse before it.
So the two verses are one statement distributed over two clauses, and what stands in this verse falls inside the preposition of ownership that stands in that one.
Between the two forms there is a difference to be read. There the act was bound as a denial with no mention of the one it belongs to; here the one it belongs to is put first with the singular pronoun, and the act is then denied of him. The first was made a possession, and the second a description of his state.
The pronoun is singular for the third time in a row: the address entered the singular at "so that you come to hardship" and does not return to the dual in this passage.
Thirst, in ẓ-m-ʾ, denotes a closing-over that screens the inward from what would replenish it, until its seeking grows sharp; that is, a shutting of the inside away from what would wet it.
It is the second inward lack in the two verses. The first was the emptying of the hollow, and this is the barring of the hollow from its supply; both of them fall inside and are not met from outside.
"There" is repeated here as it was in the verse before. It is the same adverb in the same position in the clause, so the denial is bounded by the place both times.
The joining repeats the particle of negation, as in the verse before, and the shape of the clause is reproduced down to its last detail.
Standing in the open, in ḍ-ḥ-w, is a spreading that opens out and delivers the one in it to the sun with nothing to screen him. It is an exposure from above, and not the bareness of a body.
So what is denied is the standing forth into the heat, not the heat itself, and what lifts it is shade, not drink.
The second pair, then, is thirst and open sun, drink and shade. It follows the very shape of the first pair: a lack in the hollow, then an exposure on the surface.
The four denials in the two verses are two pairs rather than four separate items. Hunger and bareness are met by what is taken and worn, and thirst and open sun by what is drunk and what one shelters under.
At the end of each of the two verses stands the shortened verb on which the single rhyme of the Surah runs, while the first member of each pair sits in the middle of its verse and does not carry that rhyme.
So what fell upon the rhyme, in both pairs, is the exposure and not the lack. This may have some bearing on the choice of the two words, and it is offered as a possibility, not as a ruling.
This root has run once before in this Surah, in the fixing of a time for an appointment: ﴿
There it is a noun for an hour at which people are gathered; here it is a verb denied of a man in a place of cover. The one word falls as an appointment there and is denied here.

﴾ Et que tu n'y auras pas soif, et que tu n'y seras pas au plein soleil. ﴿
