﴾ Abiding in it, the penalty will not be lightened on them, nor will they be granted a pause. ﴿
The root kh-l-d has the nucleus kh-l, an emptiness that attaches, the same nucleus as in khalā, khalaf and khalwa, and then the dāl, a holding that extends. So abiding, at its base, is an attaching in emptiness that is held over the stretch of time. The participle "abiding" gives settlement in a description and not a mere act. And when this participle came as a state of the pronoun in "upon them" in the previous verse, the abiding became a description of those who carry the laʿna and not the description of a bounded place. Abiding here is not the spending of a long time in a location, it is a fixed being in one determined condition, the condition of removal from the circle of the mercy.
Every pronoun goes back to the nearest thing mentioned that matches it grammatically. The nearest feminine mentioned in the setting of 161 is laʿna, and no fire is mentioned in either verse. This grammatical ruling overturns the familiar picture: the abiding is not in a place of punishment but in the state of the laʿna itself. And the substance of the laʿna, as already established, is the cutting off from the circle of the mercy. Whoever abides in the laʿna abides in the condition of one deprived of every divine good, and this is the substance of the penalty before any material bearer of it. A sensible place, where other verses name one, is a figuring of this condition and not a substitute for it.
The root kh-f-f, with its doubled fāʾ, is a lightness redoubled, a decrease that comes on in succession. The faʿʿala form in khaffafa carries gradation: the lightening known in human experience arrives in doses, one thing eases and then another. Denying the faʿʿala form in "will not be lightened" denies even that gradation: not one dose of lightening. And the passive build in "will not be lightened" drops the agent, and dropping the agent takes in every possible agent: not God, not the forces, not an intercessor, not time, not forgetting. And "on them", with the particle that carries passing-over, adds to the affirming: the penalty does not pass over them at any moment.
The root n-ẓ-r has two ends: looking in the sense of seeing, and looking in the sense of granting a delay, as in anẓarahu, he gave him time. The verse uses "granted a pause" in both senses at once: they are given no postponement in which room is opened for them to set things right, and their case is not looked into again by reopening it. It is as though the court that issued the ruling closed the case, with no appeal and no review. And the place of the closing is deliberate: it comes after the verse of the exception at 160, which opened the door of turning back on three conditions. The chance of opening that door was in this life, before dying; after dying on the covering there is none. And putting the pronoun "they" first, rather than saying simply that no pause will be granted, gives specification and restriction: not these in particular, unlike others who caught themselves in time.
The verse bolts three doors known in human rulings. The first door is the running out of the term, and "abiding" shuts it. The second door is a gradual lightening in the severity of the penalty, and "will not be lightened" shuts it, by the faʿʿala form and the passive build together. The third door is the reopening of the case, and "nor will they be granted a pause" shuts it. The three together make the structure of a final ruling that admits no appeal. Which means the verse is not a rhetorical piling-up of dread; it is the announcement of a settled judicial structure: every outlet human experience knew for easing the weight of a ruling has been bolted.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: abiding in the laʿna is the structure of a ruling and not the structure of a place; the denial of the lightening reaches even the gradation that human experience expects; and the denial of the looking bolts the door of appeal against whoever did not use the exception well while it stood open in this life. The three together are the echo of the act of permanent hiding: whoever locked the truth against others had the doors of review locked against him.
The verse is a complete tail on the ruling of 161, bolting three doors that human rulings leave open to hope. The first door is the running out of the term, shut by "abiding in it", where the pronoun in "in it" goes back grammatically to laʿna and not to a fire that neither verse mentions; abiding is a being in the state of removal from the mercy and not a residence in a material place. The second door is a gradual lightening, shut by "the penalty will not be lightened on them", by the passive build of the faʿʿala form of kh-f-f together: the passive takes in every possible agent, God, the forces, an intercessor, time, while the faʿʿala form denies even a partial gradation, not one dose of lightening. The third door is the reopening of the case, shut by "nor will they be granted a pause", with the pronoun placed first for restriction and with n-ẓ-r gathering the denial of delay and the denial of a second hearing. The chance of the exception was in this life, before dying, and the three were bolted together as the echo of the act of permanent hiding: whoever locked the truth against others had the doors of review locked against him.
﴾ Y demeurant.
