﴾ The likeness of those who covered the truth is like one who shouts at what does not catch anything but calling and sound. Deaf, mute, blind, they do not tie things together. ﴿
The verse does not set the one who covered against the shepherd. It sets a likeness against a likeness. Mathal, from m-th-l, is an image that brings one state near another; it does not match one essence to another. So "the likeness of those who covered the truth" is set beside the likeness of "one who shouts", image against image, and what is being likened is neither the herdsman nor the animal but the state standing between them, a relation in which the sound is present and the meaning is absent. The kāf of comparison is bound to the aspect the comparison was built on, and that aspect here is the missing tie between a sound and what it points to. It is not said that the one who covered is a beast in himself, nor that the one calling is a herdsman in himself. It is said that the state of his receiving of the truth is the state of the animal under the shepherd's shout: the ear takes the sound in, and the meaning does not cross. And "shouts", from n-ʿ-q, stands in the imperfect, which holds the act open and repeating: the shouting is not one cry that passes, it is a practice kept up, and so is the calling that keeps being met by a wall of chosen deafness.
"What" in "at what does not catch" is the relative used of the flock and not the relative used of persons, and the choice is deliberate: the point is to fix the absence of ʿaql in the thing shouted at, not to mark out who it is. The bāʾ attached to it fastens the shout onto its target: the shouting is stuck to the one who does not understand, reaching him by sound and not by sense. And "does not catch anything but calling and sound" is an emptying exception, not an establishing one. On its face it grants that calling and sound are heard. In truth it drains hearing of every content of meaning and shuts it up inside bare noise. Duʿāʾ and nidāʾ are near neighbours and not synonyms: duʿāʾ, from d-ʿ-w, is a held sound climbing out of a depth with a request in it, and nidāʾ, from n-d-w, is a sound that pierces and then settles. Setting the two of them together inside the negation confirms that everything reaching the ear is sound without understanding: no sound is carried through to a request that is grasped, and none to a meaning that is drawn out. The one who covered hears the sound of the truth and does not hear the truth.
"Deaf, mute, blind" arrive in the nominative, each with its own tanwīn, and no connective between them. Arabic calls this the serial laying down of predicates, and it fixes each description on its own before letting the three of them gather into a single block. A wāw between them would have made them merely added qualities. Coming one against the next, they say instead that each of them alone is enough to veil the truth, and that their coming together seals the closure. All three stand on the pattern fuʿl, which names a rooted and inseparable quality and not a passing condition: no deafness of the moment here and no blindness that came by accident, but a settled quality turned into a second nature. And the order is not idle. Deafness bars the truth from entering, muteness bars the tongue from acknowledging it, blindness bars the sight of its evidence. Reception disabled, acknowledgment disabled, discernment disabled: three gates the truth must pass to settle in a heart, and all three are shut at once.
The fāʾ before "they do not tie things together" draws the consequence out of what came before it: once the three gates were closed, the tying was cut. The pronoun "they" is a subject fronted before its verbal predicate, and fronting restricts: these and not others are the ones who put their ʿaql out of use. The root ʿ-q-l was opened at verses 164 and 170: the nucleus ʿ-q is a grasp, and the lām joins what has been grasped, like a rope binding one thing to another. ʿAql in the Qurʾān is not bare cleverness, nor memory, nor intuition. It is an act of tying: the witnessed to its cause, the trace to the one who made it, the sign to its meaning. Whoever has lost ʿaql in that sense has not lost a mind; he has lost the power to join what lies in front of him to itself. The one who covers hears the sound and sees the movement, and does not tie the voice of the caller to the sense of his call, nor the pointing of a sign to the one who sent it. That is what makes the likeness with the beast hold: the beast has no rope between sound and meaning, and the man cut his own. The two states became one state in the aspect the comparison was built on, though their origins differ. The beast was never made to tie. The man was made to tie, and put it out of use.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity. Kufr is not a term for a denial spoken aloud; it is the role of putting the instruments of reception and of tying out of use. When the ear is closed to meaning, the tongue held back from acknowledgment, the eye veiled from the evidence, and the rope between a trace and what caused it is cut, the man has earned the description of the one who is shouted at, not of the one who understands the call.
The verse closes the passage on imitation and turning away with a sharp likeness that draws the mechanism of not receiving: "The likeness of those who covered the truth is like one who shouts at what does not catch anything but calling and sound." What is likened to is neither the herdsman nor the flock but the state standing between them, a sound present and a meaning absent. The emptying exception says that all that is heard is sound drained of content: neither the calling, the sound climbing out of a depth with a request in it, is carried through to a request that is grasped, nor the sound that pierces and settles to a meaning that is drawn out. Then the three descriptions come laid one after another with no connective, "Deaf, mute, blind", each on the pattern fuʿl for the rooted quality, each enough on its own to veil the truth, and then gathering into a single block: deafness veils the entering, muteness veils the acknowledgment, blindness veils the discernment. And the fāʾ of consequence sets down the result: "they do not tie things together." ʿAql, from ʿ-q-l, is a rope binding what is witnessed to its causes; when the three gates close, the tying is cut, and nothing is left but sensations with no meaning.
Et le fāʾ de causalité pose le résultat : ﴿فَهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ﴾.
