﴾ When they are told: follow what God has sent down, they say: no, we will follow what we found our fathers on. Even if their fathers were linking nothing together and finding no way? ﴿
"When" here is the particle used for what is bound to occur, not the particle used for a doubtful possibility; the verse does not open a hypothesis, it reports a recurring event. Their being called to "follow what God has sent down" is not something awaited, it is something that happens over and over. And "they are told" is built on the passive, because the matter does not turn on who carries the message but on the soundness of what is carried: the truth reaches them through whatever opening is open, so no plea of not knowing the source is left standing. The lām in "to them" is the lām of specification: the address falls on these and on no one else. "Follow" is the iftiʿāl form of t-b-ʿ, and that form in Arabic marks an act taken on with effort and with the will gathered on it, because following is not an idle walking behind whoever went first, it is a deliberate decision that costs its owner a conscious choice. And "has sent down", from n-z-l, carries in its nucleus a movement from a height down to what lies below, the verb reaching an object left unsaid, His speech or His revelation. Four instruments in one clause, and together they close the case: an event that is certain, a message whose content is known, an act that is commanded, and a source from above that admits no dispute.
"No" is the particle that cancels what precedes it outright and fixes what follows it firmly. Their answer is not hesitation and not a request for time, it is a flat refusal that meets a firm command with a firmness of its own. And "we will follow" comes in the same iftiʿāl form as the command, so the two verbs stand face to face in one shape: a costly following was asked of them, and they answered with a costly following turned the other way. The verb stands in the imperfect, which says continuance and not a passing moment: this is their settled course, not a stance taken once. The word the whole reply rests on is alfaynā, from l-f-y, whose nucleus is the coming upon a thing without seeking it and without search; the verb is used of a thing met already laid out, which the one who met it had never aimed at. To build the argument on that verb is to admit, without meaning to, that the inheritance was neither chosen nor tested; it was come upon, and then taken up. This is where the real opposition of the verse lies: "has sent down" is an intended source coming from a height, and "we found" is an incidental meeting with no source at all.
"On" is the preposition of resting upon and of holding a position, and the sense here is that the fathers were "on" this inheritance in the manner of settling above it, not of working within it. This is the finest point the verse uncovers. In the eyes of the sons, the fathers are not the origin of what was handed down and not its examiners; they are its place. They became ground for the inheritance to rest on, not minds that made it. That is why the verb "we found" is carried to its object by "on" and not by "in": they did not find the inheritance inside their fathers, which would have meant certainty and sifting, but upon them, leaning on them like a load carried over from an earlier generation. And so the whole line of receiving is blind from its top to its bottom. Each generation is a place for whatever settled on it, never an agent in it.
"Even if" is a knot of three things at once: the interrogative hamza that denies rather than asks, a wāw joined onto a clause left out, "would you follow them even if their fathers", and law, in origin the particle of the ruled out, here hung on the denial so that it turns into a refusal of a supposition already standing. The sense: would they do this even once it is settled that their fathers were tying nothing together? And "were" is the verb of duration in the past, which carries the denial out of a single moment into a fixed condition: the question is not whether the fathers were once inattentive, but whether they were at root a people who did not tie. The root ʿ-q-l was opened at verse 164: the nucleus ʿ-q is a firm holding that stands up out of the depth, and the lām is a movement of binding, so "linking" is to bind one thing to another with a rope of understanding. ʿAql in the Qurʾān is not bare cleverness; it is the power to tie what is seen to what has been sent down, and the surface of a thing to the cause underneath it. And "nothing" comes indefinite inside a negation, which in Arabic exhausts the field: not one thing, however small, do they tie. So the denial is not aimed at a weakness of mind. It is aimed at the absence of the act of tying altogether.
"Finding no way" is the iftiʿāl form again, here of h-d-y, and the form carries effort and striving: guidance is not a thing thrown over a man from outside, it is a course that asks a measure of movement from within. The root came earlier, at verses 2 and 157: the nucleus h-d is the release of what had been pent up, and the yāʾ is a joining and an extension, so being guided is in its make an emptying of the obstruction and a joining to the course. The negation stands in the imperfect, which fixes the failure as continuing: not a blockage of the moment, but a standing absence of both the striving and the joining. And once "linking nothing together" and "finding no way" are set side by side, the case is closed from both ends: no inward tying between things, and no outward joining to a course that leads anywhere true. Inside is scattered; outside is cut. Whoever follows a people in whom both incapacities met has followed a doubled incapacity, not a useful inheritance.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity. "Father" is not a title that sanctifies by itself; it is a role held to the measure that the father ties and finds his way. If he tied, and bound, and reached, he has earned being taken as a model to the measure of what he tied. If he tied nothing and arrived nowhere, the role has fallen, though the name remains.
The verse lays the mechanism of imitation bare in the shape of a hearing and a reply that keep repeating: "When they are told: follow what God has sent down, they say: no, we will follow what we found our fathers on." The verb alfaynā, from l-f-y, carries an admission inside it: the inheritance was not chosen and not tested, it was met already laid out, set against "has sent down", which carries an intent coming from a height. That is the true opposition of the two expressions, an intended source from above against an incidental finding with no source. Then the question cuts across, denying by asking: "Even if their fathers were linking nothing together and finding no way?" The two negations empty the qualification from both its ends: "linking nothing" denies the inward tying between things, ʿ-q-l being the binding rope, and "finding no way" denies the outward joining to a sound course. Whoever inherited from a people in whom both incapacities met inherited a doubled error. The verse does not forbid inheritance; it forbids inheriting without an examination by the tying ʿaql. The father is a role to the measure of what he tied and what he joined, and when the role falls the right to be modelled upon falls with it.
