﴾ When you were ascending and turning toward no one, while the messenger called you from your rear, He repaid you with grief upon grief so that you would not grieve over what escaped you or what struck you. Allah is aware of what you do. ﴿
"When" refers to a time within the course already described, and "you were ascending" is an imperfect that summons the movement into presence. Ascent, from ṣ-ʿ-d, denotes a firm closing that appears out of the depth and then presses through and penetrates, so it carries a passage toward a higher side. The verb is attributed to the addressed plural, so the ascent is the movement of a gathering at one single time. To it the wāw joins a negation, "you turn toward no one." Turning, from l-w-y, is an attaching that knots and then extends in a bending, but the negation cuts off their turning back and their leaning toward anyone at all, and the indefinite under negation takes in every person without a name; the ascent cuts the turning off.
The wāw is circumstantial and introduces a sentence running at the same time: the messenger is calling you. "Messenger" is an adjective on the pattern faʿūl, with a continuing active nature in the bearing of the message, and it is by that description alone that the sentence sets him in the scene; the quality of the bearing is what speaks him. Calling, from d-ʿ-w, is a press that appears out of the depth and then issues toward the one called, so it carries a call asking him to come, and its object is the pronoun of the addressees. The phrase "at your rear" is from ʾ-kh-r, a releasing that pierces and runs toward a later side, so it places the call behind them. Two opposed directions therefore gather in one sentence: a company ascending forward, and a call that remains at the rear asking that company to come.
The fāʾ follows upon the scene with a past verb, "He repaid you." Requital, from th-w-b, is what leaves its place and goes on, then joins it again and holds to it, and the causative pattern carries the counterpart across to the addressees. The second object, "grief," is from gh-m-m, an inward sinking that gathers and clings close, after which the repetition of the mīm thickens the containing, so it carries a narrowness that covers the inside. The bāʾ then brings another "grief" and sets grief facing grief. So the bāʾ alone binds the two griefs and makes one of them the counterpart of the other, and the repayment is to be read in that very facing: one word given back exactly as it was, with only its position changed.
The lām, kay and lā combine in a negated purpose: so that you would not grieve. Grief, from ḥ-z-n, is an inward containing that presses upon itself and is then held back, so it carries a pain that shuts the inside. "Over" attaches to two relatives, and grieving is denied over both of them. The first, "what escaped you," is from f-w-t, something that passes through and then slips free and is cut off from the one who was reaching it, so it carries what passed beyond reach; the second, "what struck you," carries what arrived at them. The coordination gathers the escaped and the striking without naming either one, so each remains carried by its own verb alone: this one passed away from them, that one reached them, and grief is denied over both within a single purpose.
The wāw begins a nominal sentence whose subject is the name of Allah and whose predicate is "aware." Awareness, from kh-b-r, is a running pierce that connects and holds fast and then runs on unbroken, so it carries a knowledge that penetrates to the inside of the matter; "aware" is an intensive form bearing the density of the attribute and its continuance. The bāʾ attaches to the relative "what you do," doing being an act that appears out of the depth and gathers and then attaches to an effect. The imperfect gathers their renewed movement under that awareness, so neither the ascending nor the not turning, nor anything else, remains outside the closing, and the act lies open to the knowing.
"When" summons the movement of the addressees as they ascend and turn toward no one, while at that same time the messenger calls them at their rear. The fāʾ follows with a repayment of grief by grief, and the purpose then ties this to their not grieving over what escaped them or what struck them. The two relatives keep each thing carried by its own act, what escaped and what struck, and the messenger remains carried by the description of his bearing of the message as he calls from the rear. In the closing, all the acts enter under Allah's penetrating awareness, so the movement is not read apart from the knowledge of what it brought about.
