﴾ Those are the ones whose deeds came to nothing in the nearer life and the latter, and they have no helpers. ﴿
The demonstrative opens a distance and gathers the owners of the preceding acts into one single scene: the covering of the signs, the killing of the bearers of the announcement, and the killing of those who command equity. The relative "the ones" then binds that pointing to the new judgment, which is built upon the chain the text itself has named, not upon an unspoken lineage.
Ḥubūṭ, coming to nothing, from ḥ-b-ṭ, denotes a living containment that attaches and holds fast and then spreads out with weight until its effect drops: an outward fullness that carries within itself no power to endure, and so ends in nullity. The verb is in the past tense: the outcome of the deeds had already been realized in their structure before its completion could be seen.
Aʿmāl, deeds, from ʿ-m-l, are an emergence out of depth that gathers and then extends, attached to the world. A deed is what comes out of the inward and takes shape as an effect, not the motion of a body alone. When it comes to nothing, its having happened is not erased, yet the weight its owner was seeking for it drops away.
The nearer life, from d-n-w, is the closest life, the one joined to the senses. The latter, from ʾ-kh-r, is a firm limit that opens what lies beyond nearness and runs toward it. Joining the latter onto the nearer takes in both times of looking: a deed come to nothing can claim neither a near success that rescues it from its outcome nor a far outcome that makes up for the corruption of what was near.
Coming to nothing therefore uncovers that an act which severed the sign and the balance holds within itself nothing able to carry it across any span; it is no postponing of value to another time.
Naṣr, help, from n-ṣ-r, is a springing up that attaches with solidity and then runs repeatedly around the one it reaches. A helper is an active participle, a working nature continuing in support. The particle of negation and the partitive together exhaust the denial: not one single helper, and not the kind of helper at all; what has been voided of its power from within is not raised up by a multitude of hands from without.
"Those" gathers the preceding acts and then shows their outcome in the deed itself: it came to nothing, filling out in appearance before its weight dropped. The fall extends through the nearer life and the latter, so the deed finds no time that returns to it a value it never carried. The helper is then denied, because the trouble lies in the act's emptiness of a meaning able to hold it up, not in a shortage of force from outside.
