﴾ Those who cover Allah's signs, kill the prophets without right, and kill from among humankind those who command equity: announce to them a painful torment. ﴿
The verb is in the present tense, which makes the covering a renewed and continuing state. Kufr, from k-f-r, denotes a concealment that penetrates while it separates and then runs on and repeats itself, so that a veil is laid over what had been indicating. The object of the covering here is Allah's signs, the marks that bind a scene to its Source; those who cover them do not abolish the sign, and their work lies in severing what it indicates.
The verse begins with the act of knowing before the act of the body: closing the channel of indication prepares the closing of the channel of the voice, and once the sign is covered, no one who carries it remains safe for the mere reason that he is human.
Qatl, killing, from q-t-l, is a knot in the depth of a thing that is cut, so that what it clung to and held slips away from it: a life parted from its owner. The repeated present tense lifts the killing out of the isolated occurrence and makes of it a pattern turned toward everyone who carries the announcement. A prophet, from n-b-ʾ, is one who carries news that springs up and arrives, and is then made firm as a declaration.
"Without right" denies every field in which the severing might be dressed in the garment of the balance. Ḥaqq, from ḥ-q-q, is a contained life made firm, whose firmness is then redoubled, so that the thing stands settled in its own place. The killing in this verse stands in no place of right; it is an assault on the very place that carries the announcement.
The verb "and they kill" is repeated before the second group, so that the killing of that group stands alone in a verb named for itself and carries the same weight as the first verb. These, from among humankind, are those who command equity. Amr, command, from ʾ-m-r, is a decisiveness that gathers and clings and then runs on into an act; that is, a word that demands its own realization and is not content with description.
Qisṭ, equity, from q-s-ṭ, is a firm limit that extends along a course and then spreads out with the weight of the balance, and whoever commands it calls every party to its own place. So the verse uncovers a single escalation: the sign is covered, then the bearer of the announcement is cut off, then every one among humankind who returns the balance to speech is cut off.
The connective joins the acts to their result. In its origin, a glad announcement is news whose effect shows upon the skin, yet here its object is a painful torment. The reversal does not lighten the torment; what it uncovers is that whoever silenced the announcement of equity will receive an announcement he cannot silence. "Painful," from ʾ-l-m, is a limit that falls, then catches, then closes shut. It describes what takes hold, not what is held, and for that reason the adjective runs upon the torment, in the genitive after the preposition, and does not come down upon those to whom it is announced.
The verse traces a road from covering to killing: Allah's signs are veiled, then whoever carries their announcement is cut off, then whoever among humankind seeks the setting up of the balance is cut off. The violence is aimed at indication before it is aimed at bodies. That is why the answer takes the shape of news that turns against what it seems, announce to them a painful torment, and whoever wanted to hold a monopoly on what may be heard is given notice of an outcome that appears and is not covered.
