﴾ So he willed to jolt them off the ground; and We drowned him and every one who was with him. ﴿
"So he willed" opens with a fāʾ that follows the saying with a will, and not with a deed. It is a fāʾ with no interval: a saying, then a willing.
No act that took place is mentioned of him; his will is mentioned, and that is all the verse attributes to him. What is told, then, is a resolve and not an event.
The root r-w-d denotes a striving that runs and stretches out, pressing on toward what it aims at. From it comes the rāʾid, the scout who goes back and forth over the land until he lights on the spot, settles on it and points the way to it. So willing is a striving that presses on until it reaches its aim, rather than a thought that passes by.
What falls at the end of the verse falls on this, not on anything completed: a resolve took hold, and the answer came down on it before it was carried out.
Then comes "to jolt them off the ground", a verb that recurs in the Surah for three alone. The root f-z-z is a shaking that splits a thing's resting place, so that the thing grows light and slips out of it; from it comes al-fazz, the light one who leaps. What is willed here, then, is an unsettling that makes the fixed thing light until it is torn from its resting place, not an expulsion by a hand that pushes.
Istafazza is on the pattern istafʿala, the form of seeking; it means the seeking of that uprooting, and the striving toward it.
This verb runs in this Surah in only three places, and nothing joins those who do it except the verb itself. One was commanded to do it: ﴿وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُم بِصَوْتِكَ﴾. It came near falling on another: ﴿وَإِن كَادُوا لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ﴾. Here it is willed for a people. There are three places and one verb, and two of them end in the very same two words, "off the ground".
The min here marks the starting point. What they would be pulled from is named, while what they would be pulled to is left out; the verse says what they would be torn from, and does not say to where.
The ground, in its root, is a fixed resting place over which whatever runs runs, and which holds it to itself by its weight. So what is willed is the lightening of what was made heavy, and the pulling of the settled thing from its settling place.
Then "and We drowned him" gives an answer that comes down on the opposite side. This is a second fāʾ in a single verse: the first carried a saying over to a will, the second carries a will over to an answer, and in neither place is there an interval.
One word carries the whole answer. Its manner is not described, its instrument is not named, and the scene is not drawn out; the act is named, and the verse stops at it.
The root gh-r-q denotes a dense covering that runs and then knots itself in the depth, so that no way out is left to what is submerged. It stands in contrast with what was willed: the will was a lifting off a resting place, upward, while the answer is a knotting in a depth, downward. An uprooting was sought, and a closing-over came down.
Whoever wills to tear a people from a ground that bears them is taken by what has no ground beneath it.
Then "every one who was with him" is a relative clause that neither describes nor counts. Man is a vague relative, with no name, no number and no description, and what is said of them is a single word: that they were with him.
Maʿa is an adverb of accompaniment. So the tie that brought them under the ruling is the being-with itself, not an act the verse attributes to them.
Then comes jamīʿan, "every one", a circumstantial that covers the whole. The root j-m-ʿ is a drawing together that lifts scatteredness and brings what was scattered into one field. So the last word shuts the door on the sentence: not one is left outside the ruling, and not one is sorted out inside it.
The verse holds two motions: a will that parts a people from their ground, and an answer that gathers a people into a single word. The parting remained a thing willed, while the gathering took place.
A fāʾ follows the saying with a will, and r-w-d is a striving that stretches out, pressing on toward its end, so what is attributed to him is a resolve and not a completed act. Then "to jolt them", yastafizzahum, on the pattern istafʿala from f-z-z: the seeking of a shaking that splits the resting place, so that the settled thing grows light and is torn away; the verb runs in this Surah in only three places, for three doers, two of them with "off the ground" word for word. The min marks the starting point: what they would be pulled from is named, and where to is left out. The root ʾ-r-ḍ is a fixed resting place that holds what is on it by its weight, so what is willed is the lightening of what was made heavy. Then a second fāʾ, and one word carrying the answer with no description of its manner; gh-r-q is a covering that runs and then knots in the depth, leaving no way out: a lifting upward was sought, and a knotting below came down. Then "who was with him", a relative clause that neither describes nor counts, whose only tie is the being-with; and jamīʿan, from j-m-ʿ, a drawing together that lifts scatteredness. A will parts from a ground, and an answer gathers into a word.
Nul nom, nul nombre, nulle qualification.
