﴾ That is their recompense, for that they covered over Our signs and said: What, when we have become bones and crumbled remains, are we truly to be raised as a new creation? ﴿
"That" is the demonstrative for what is far. It points back at what has just closed, so what is pointed at becomes a single mass to be set opposite something rather than taken apart. Had it been the near demonstrative, the matter would still be between the hands. Then a nominal sentence with no verb in it: a subject and a predicate annexed to their pronoun. It does not say "they were requited" or "We shall requite them"; it states that this is their recompense. A standing relation, not an event falling at a time. And the root j-z-y is a mass through which a running edge passes and cuts off a portion answering a portion; from it comes the word for a part severed from a whole by a limit, and the verb for standing in someone's place and discharging what is owed. Recompense, in these letters, is an answering by measure, not an excess thrown on and not a revenge worked up. Annexed to them, it becomes the share that was cut for them.
The bāʾ that follows is the bāʾ of cause, and it has come in over anna, so what follows it stands as a stated ground. The recompense is not left loose; it is tied to a cause said out loud. And inside that one cause a verb is coordinated with a verb: a covering and a saying, two and not one, with no difference between them in rank and none in ruling. Whoever sets speech in the same line as the deed has made the tongue a worker among workers.
The root k-f-r is a holding-in that keeps off what is below it and then clings to what it hides so that it does not slip. The covering in these letters does not annul what is covered: it screens it from the eye and it stays underneath. And the particle in "Our signs" is one of contact, not of report. It does not say they covered over away from the signs; what is hidden presses against what hides it rather than lying at a distance from it, and whoever covers a thing has first touched it. And "Our signs" is a plural annexed to the Speaker. Sign has its own entry in the glossary; what this clause adds is that it attaches the signs to the very one who states the recompense, so that what was covered belongs to the one who is doing the reckoning.
Here is where the verse turns. The sentence that follows "and said" has already fallen in this Surah, letter for letter, with nothing taken from it and nothing added: ﴿وَقَالُوا أَإِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا وَرُفَاتًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ خَلْقًا جَدِيدًا﴾. It was read there in its own place, and its wording is not taken apart again here. What changed is its position, not its words. There it was a saying transmitted, and the verse stopped at the edge of the transmission; here it stands under "for that they", and it has become a ground in the grounding of a recompense. What came out of their own mouths is the very thing raised against them. And it is not summarized, not characterized, and not turned into "because they denied the raising". The saying is handed back whole, as it was said. When the charge is in the wording of the one charged, there is nothing left in it to argue over.
One sentence stands twice in this Surah without a letter changed: first as their question, then as the reason given for what falls to them.
