﴾ And whomever God guides, he is the one guided; and whomever He lets stray, you will find for them no protectors apart from Him. And We gather them on the Day of Standing upon their faces, blind and dumb and deaf. Their shelter is Jahannam: every time it dies down We increase them in blazing. ﴿
Guidance and straying both have their own entries in the glossary. What this verse adds is the shape of the two answers. It does not say "then he has been guided". It says "he is the one guided": a nominal sentence whose predicate carries the definite article, and a definite predicate confines the whole kind to its subject, so the man is not merely reported as having been guided, the name itself is given over to him. And look at the form. The guiding is attributed to God outright, and then the man is named on the eighth form, which throws an act back onto the one who does it. The verb is ascribed there and the noun is ascribed here, and neither ascription is used to push the other out; the wording carries both and does not choose.
The second condition matches the first in its build and departs from it in its answer. There a name is handed over; here an absence is announced: "you will find for them no protectors apart from Him." The first says what he becomes, the second says what is not to be found for him. And an addressee enters who was not in the sentence before, since "you will find" is a second-person singular: the negation is not turned toward them but toward whoever would go looking on their behalf, and the one told he will not find has had the search closed before it opened. "Protectors" is an indefinite plural under an absolute negation, so the whole kind is swallowed, neither one nor a group; protection has its own entry in the glossary. "Apart from Him" carves out a single direction by a pronoun, so what is denied is denied of everything besides it and not of it. And here the number shifts. The relative "whoever" is singular in both conditions, and a singular pronoun answers it in the first while a plural pronoun answers it in the second, and the singular never returns to the end of the verse. Guidance stays one in its wording; straying is put into the plural and goes on plural.
Gathering has its own entry in the glossary, and so does the face. What is read here is a single particle. It does not say "to their faces" or "by their faces". It says "upon their faces", the particle of being borne on something: the face has become what they are carried on. In its ordinary state the face is what one is met by and known by; nothing beyond this is added that the verse has not said. And "We gather them" is attributed openly, with the gathered ones joined to the verb as its object, and there is no time in the wording except the one named, a term of time the verse neither describes nor explains. Then three words in the accusative, indefinite and plural, each joined to the next by a single connective. They are circumstantial accusatives on the pronoun in "We gather them": they do not say what these become after the gathering, they say the state they are gathered in. Blindness, dumbness and deafness are standing concepts in the glossary and their roots are not taken apart here; what belongs to this place is that all three fall together in one clause as explicit plural forms, rather than one being named and the rest inferred. And look at the order: what one sees with, then what one speaks with, then what one hears with. Three openings in the very face they are carried upon, named as stopped, right after the face was named as laid down. The verse sets the state and gives no cause for it.
Then a sentence with no verb in it at all: a subject annexed to their pronoun, and a predicate that is a name the wording supplies. No driving, no entering, no casting; only a relation stated. And the word for their place is on the pattern for a noun of place, from the root ʾ-w-y, a drawing-in that encloses what it draws and stays over it; from it comes the verb for taking someone in and sheltering him. So the very word by which a refuge is named is the word set down here, annexed to them, made theirs. The name that came as predicate is named by the verse and not described by it, so it is said as the verse said it and left where the verse left it. Then a repeating clause: "every time" gives recurrence without a number to bound it, so this is not a report of one occasion but a rule that runs. Khabat is from kh-b-w, a diminishing that folds in on itself and is held there without being annulled: it is said of a fire when its flame settles and what lies under it remains, which is not the going out in which the source itself departs. What the verse names is the stilling of the surface, not the ending of the matter. And "We increase them in blazing": the increase falls on them, not on the fire, their pronoun standing as first object and the blazing as an indefinite second. Blazing, in its root, is a rising that comes out of the depth and then runs on unbroken. What settled, settled on one side; what was increased was increased on another.
The word that names a shelter is the word set over what shelters no one, and the dying-down from which rest would be expected is the exact place where the increase falls.
