Commentary
An oath particle opens the verse, followed by a particle of verification: the report is affirmed twice over before it is said.
A past verb follows in the plural of majesty, made transitive by the preposition of arrival; the verse does not say that the charge was laid upon him.
In this tongue the preposition of imposition carries a sense of weight set down upon the one charged, whereas the preposition used here marks the end of a reaching. So the charge in this verse was brought through to him as to an end, and was not loaded onto him as a load.
A charge, in ʿ-h-d, is the casting out of what is in the inward toward another and then its being fixed with him. So the preposition agrees with the root: a casting that ends at a place where it is deposited.
The verse has no object. It says to whom the charge came and leaves unsaid what it was, and whoever names it names what the wording kept silent about.
The time word is built upon a single vowel because it has been cut off from what it would be annexed to. So it is not said: before what.
This place is to be read, not filled in. The adverb affirms a precedence without fixing what was preceded.
The particle that follows is one of sequence with no interval: the forgetting is joined to the charge with nothing standing between them.
Forgetting, in n-s-y, is a soft slipping that steals out of the grip and is not felt as it goes, the departure of a thing with no intent to let it go.
The first standing of this root in the Surah was a denial made of the Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), ﴿لَّا يَضِلُّ رَبِّي وَلَا يَنسَى﴾, a denial that came before every affirming.
It then fell upon a human being in the first scene, in this very wording: ﴿فَنَسِيَ﴾. Here it stands letter for letter, adding nothing and dropping nothing, a past verb after a particle of sequence, in another setting and of another man; this is the root's third standing in the Surah.
So the root is denied the first time it comes, and afterward it happens; what was denied of the Rabb is the very thing affirmed of the one the charge reached.
In place of "and he disobeyed" or "and he did not obey," the words are "and We found not," a verb of encounter, not a verb of verdict.
Finding, in w-j-d, is a meeting that knots and holds. So what is denied is the meeting of something firm in the place where it is looked for.
It is made transitive by the particle of belonging, "in him." So what is denied is his having of this thing, not the falling out of any act from him.
Resolve is from ʿ-z-m: a knot that packs tight in the inward and is held so that it does not come undone. It stands indefinite in the accusative, with no description and no annexation.
The forgetting affirmed in the verse and the resolve denied in it meet in one single image: forgetting is a slipping out of a grip, and resolve is that grip itself. The verse states that the thing slipped away, and then that nothing had ever been cast into him to hold it.
Had obedience been denied, the verdict would have fallen upon the deed. Resolve is denied, so the verdict falls upon what comes before the deed; the difference between them is that the first describes what a man did, and the second what never knotted in him.
The report is affirmed twice over before it is said; then comes a verb in the plural of majesty made transitive by the preposition of arrival, not by the preposition of imposition. The charge was brought through to him as to an end and was not loaded onto him, and the preposition agrees with the root, for a charge, in ʿ-h-d, is the casting out of what is in the inward toward another and then its being fixed with him. There is no object in the verse: it says to whom the charge came, not what it was, and whoever names it names what the wording kept silent about. A time word follows, cut off from its annexation and built upon a single vowel, affirming a precedence and fixing nothing that was preceded; then a particle of sequence with no interval, and forgetting, in n-s-y, is a soft slipping that steals out of the grip and is not felt as it goes. The first standing of this root in the Surah was a denial made of the Rabb before it fell upon anyone; it then fell in the first scene in this very wording, and here it stands letter for letter in another setting and of another man. As for the end of the verse, it holds no denial of obedience and no affirming of disobedience: a verb of encounter is denied and made transitive by the particle of belonging, and finding, in w-j-d, is a meeting that knots and holds, so that what is denied is his having of this thing, not a deed that he did. Resolve, from ʿ-z-m, is a knot that packs tight in the inward and is held so that it does not come undone, standing indefinite with no description and no annexation. The affirmed forgetting and the denied resolve are one image, forgetting being a slipping out of a grip and resolve the grip itself: the thing slipped away, and nothing had been cast into him to hold it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as reporting that Adam was forbidden the tree by his Lord, forgot the prohibition and did not hold out against it. The content of the charge is filled in from the verses that follow, or from narratives told to complete the story; the denial of resolve is read as a denial of patience or firmness; and the discussion turns on softening or sharpening the verdict upon him.
A reading that names what the line does not name.
A root-reading
ʿAhidnā (ʿ-h-d) is the casting out of what is in the inward toward another and then its being fixed with him, and it is made transitive by a preposition of arrival and not of imposition: the end of a reaching, not a weight set on the one charged, and the preposition agrees with the root. There is no object in the line: what was charged is not named at all. The adverb of time is cut off from its annexation and built on a single vowel; it affirms a precedence and fixes nothing preceded. Fanasiya (n-s-y) is a soft slipping that steals out of the grip unfelt; it is the root's third standing in the Surah, and its first was a denial made of the Rabb before any affirming. "We did not find" (w-j-d) denies a meeting that knots and holds, and is made transitive by a preposition of belonging, so what is denied is his having it. And resolve (ʿ-z-m) is a knot that packs tight inwardly and is held so as not to come undone: the denial falls on the grip, not on the deed.
A reading that reads the preposition, halts where nothing is named, and puts the denial in its own place.
Both readings stop at the forgetting; the second does not name what was charged, and reads the denial as falling on resolve rather than on obedience. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

A report doubly confirmed before it is spoken, and then three places where the line falls silent. It is not said what the charge was, nor what the "before" came before, nor what was done after the slipping. What remains after that silence is three things: a direction the charge ended at, a slipping that happened, and a knot that was not found.
And the particle matches the material. "To" is the end of a reach, and the charge in its root is the casting of what is within to another and then its fixing there, so the charge arrived and was not loaded on. Then a connective with no interval in it: between the arriving and the slipping there is no stretch in which it could be said that he kept it and then betrayed it. And forgetting, in its material, is a fine slipping that is not felt while it slips away, so it is not a deed one sets out to do.
And the end of the line puts the negation in its place. No obedience is denied and no disobedience affirmed; what is denied is the meeting of a thing in the man's keeping: a verb of finding carried by a possessive particle, not a verb of judgment. And the affirmed forgetting and the denied resolve in the line are one shape: what slipped, slipped because the grip was not there. A line that could have said that he disobeyed said instead that nothing was found with him to hold by.
Perhaps what the line names is closer to what anyone knows of himself than is supposed: that speech said once and tied to nothing that holds it goes without its going being felt, and that a charge with no knot in it is not broken, it slips. And it may be that this explains why human communities everywhere have not been content with speech alone in order to keep it: they repeated it on a measure that holds, knotted it into a cord, cut it into a stick or a stone, and set up a place to be returned to. Perhaps all of that is an attempt to supply from outside the very knot the line says was not found within. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse itself mentioned only a direction, an unnamed charge, a slipping, and a knot that was not found, and settled nothing about how a human being keeps what is said to him.
