﴾ And were it not for a word that ran ahead from your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), it would have been a thing that cleaves fast; and a term that is named. ﴿
The opening particle is one that withholds a consequence because a condition is present: the answer is withheld precisely because the thing named is there. So the verse reports that a matter was going to fall and did not fall, because something else was already present ahead of it.
The construction gives two things and hides a third: it gives the withholder and the description of what was withheld, and it does not give the withheld thing itself.
"A word" is indefinite: not the word, not Our word, and not the word of anything at all. It is an indefinite noun standing at the head of the clause as its subject.
The root k-l-m denotes a holding in that clings and extends and is then gathered into a single unit, a meaning shut inside a shape that keeps its hold. So a word, in its own material, is a sealed vessel that carries what is in it and does not show it.
That is why the indefiniteness matches the root: a vessel that is mentioned and not opened.
"Ran ahead" is from s-b-q: a flowing that runs in a channel and is then cut firm at a limit, and to run ahead is to reach the limit before another does. What it ran ahead of is not said; the verb stands here with nothing outrun named after it.
"From your Rabb" is the only definite thing in the whole condition. What the word is, and what it outran, are not known; where it came from is known.
Then comes a letter falling in the answer of that opening particle, then a verb that needs a subject, then its predicate. Its subject is a pronoun carried inside the verb, with nothing named in the verse for it to refer back to.
So the sentence says that something "would have been" a cleaving fast, without saying what that something is, and this silence is guarded, not filled.
"A thing that cleaves fast" is from l-z-m: a pressed sticking, held in, that does not come apart. From it comes the saying that a thing lazima a thing, that is, it clung to it and did not leave it.
It is a verbal noun used as a description; the participle, "a clinging one," was not used. A verbal noun used as a description points to the event itself, not to one thing that carries the event: it would have been a cleaving, not a thing that cleaves.
It came indefinite, just as the word before it came indefinite.
Then a connective, and then a noun in the nominative, indefinite. It is joined to what came before it and stands up alongside it, and the speech completes itself while leaving its predicate incomplete.
"A term" is from ʾ-j-l: a stretch held back and knotted to an end that it runs out at. The holding back and the end are both inside the root, a stretch that is not seen and that has an edge it stops at.
"That is named" is a passive participle from s-m-w: an extending that rises and stays joined to what is beneath it, and from it comes the word for a name, the mark raised over the thing it names. So what is named is the thing over which a mark has been raised.
It is described as named, and its naming is not mentioned. A mark is raised and what is on it is not read; this is what the verse says, and this is its limit.
So a single verse holds three things: a word that is not said to be anything, a cleaving fast that is not said to fall upon anyone, and a term said to have a name whose name is not said, all three of them without the article.
What is named may be named for someone other than the one who hears.
A particle withholds a consequence because a condition is present, so the verse reports that a matter was going to fall and that something already present, ahead of it, withheld it. The withholder is "a word," indefinite, from k-l-m, a holding in that clings and extends and is then gathered into a single unit, so the material is a vessel that carries what is in it and does not show it, and the indefiniteness matches the root. "Ran ahead," from s-b-q, is a flowing that runs and is then cut firm at a limit, and what it outran is not mentioned. "From your Rabb" alone is the definite thing in the condition: what the word is remains unknown, and where it came from is known. Then comes an answer with its opening letter and a verb whose subject is never named, so it is said that something "would have been" a cleaving fast and it is not said what. "A thing that cleaves fast," from l-z-m, is a pressed sticking that does not come apart; it came as a verbal noun used as a description rather than as a participle, so it is the event itself, not one thing that carries the event. A third is then joined on: "a term," from ʾ-j-l, a stretch held back and knotted to an end it runs out at, described as "named," from s-m-w, the mark raised over what is beneath it. It is described as having a name, and the name is not mentioned. There are three indefinites in a single verse: a word that is not opened, a cleaving that is not said to fall upon anyone, and a term over which a mark has been raised that is not read. A mark is raised so that whoever is meant to see it will see it.
