﴾ Has it not guided for them, how many We brought to their end before them of the generations, walking about in their dwelling places? In that are signs for those who have what holds them back. ﴿
A question-letter, then a connective, then a negation: three letters stand in front of the verb, and the question is raised over something that did not happen, not over something that did.
The verb is from h-d-y, a root that came earlier in this sūra when a man sought something at a fire and said ﴿أَجِدُ عَلَى النَّارِ هُدًى﴾, "or find upon the fire a guidance." Here the same material is set inside a question of reproach.
The agent of the verb is the whole clause that follows it, "how many We brought to their end before them of the generations," and not a single noun standing after it. What guides is a number, and what that number is is never said.
The phrase "for them" carries the lām. Instead of "guide them," with a direct object, the verse says "guide for them," that is, make it plain to them and set the bearing on their behalf. Guidance in this verse is a thing laid out in front of their hands, not a hand that takes their hand.
"How many" is here the reporting form, the one used for multiplying: it says "many" without saying how many, a word laid down for number that gives out no number.
This half of the verse is where a reader comes to a stop. Had a figure been given, the report would have become a datable history; had a name been given, it would have become a story to be told. It gives neither figure nor name.
"We brought to their end" is from h-l-k: a thing that stood within its bounds in its place being cut off from it and going out, so that its place is left empty. The verb comes on the fourth form, so the cutting-off falls by an agent from outside, and the plural of majesty names that agent openly.
"The generations" is from q-r-n: a firm joining that couples a thing to its like, so that the two run together and then go out. The material names the coupling and does not name a measure of time. The particle before the noun takes a part out of a definite plural: some of a whole that is not counted.
The word does not count, the root does not date, and the name does not appear: three doors to identification are shut within half a verse.
A circumstantial clause follows whose owner is left unsettled. The plural in "walking about" admits the living, walking about in the dwellings of those who are gone, and it admits the gone themselves, who used to walk about in their own. Both faces are declared, and neither is settled over the other.
"Walking about" is from m-sh-y: an unbroken, soft passage with no leaping in it, foot after foot, the quietest that moving ever becomes.
"Their dwelling places" is from s-k-n: a holding that keeps to its spot after a motion has been stopped up. So the two materials stand facing each other at the root, this one a motion continued, that one a motion silenced.
The preposition sets the first inside the second: a walking about in the belly of a stillness.
The verse does not say where these dwellings are, how they are, or what is left of them; it gives a motion in a place and moves on.
This sentence, whole, has already been said in this sūra, in its letters rather than merely in its sense. There, what came before it was speech of plants that are eaten and beasts that are pastured; here it comes after speech of generations brought to their end and dwellings walked about in.
It is one single mark, for a green pasture and for an emptied house, and neither its form nor the one it belongs to was changed.
It carries three instruments of emphasis, just as it does there: the emphatic particle, the fronting of the place-phrase, and the lām on "signs." The demonstrative is single and points to everything that came before it, while "signs" is an indefinite plural, neither counted nor specified.
"What holds them back" is from n-h-y, the root of forbidding and of standing still at a limit. From it come the verb for having reached the edge and stopped, and the nahy, the pool that the water arrives at, is held in, and goes no further. So the one who owns a nuhya is the one who carries a check that turns him back when he bolts.
The material holds no quickness of mind and no swiftness of wit, and this is read more heavily here than it is read there: a trace that is walked about inside is caught by whoever is able to come to a stop inside it, not by keenness of looking.
The walking in this verse is a motion that does not stop, and the mark is for whoever has in him what stops him.
A question-letter, a connective and a negation stand before the verb, so what is asked after is a guidance that did not happen, not an event that did. The verb is from h-d-y, the material a man sought at a fire in the opening of this sūra, and its agent is a whole clause, not a single noun; "for them" comes with the lām instead of the direct object, so guidance is a thing laid out in front of the hands. Then come "how many," a word of multiplying that gives out no number; "We brought to their end," from h-l-k, a thing cut off from its place and going out of it until the place is empty, by an agent from outside; and "the generations," from q-r-n, a firm joining that couples a thing to its like, so that the material names the coupling and not a measure of time, while the particle before it takes a part. So there is no figure, no date, no name. A circumstantial clause follows whose owner is not settled between those who remain and those who are gone: its verb is from m-sh-y, an unbroken soft passage with no leaping in it; its place is from s-k-n, a holding that keeps to its spot after a motion has been stopped up; and the preposition sets the motion inside the stillness. A sentence already said in this sūra then comes back in its own letters, with a green pasture before it there and emptied dwellings before it here: one single mark for the two. The one it belongs to is from n-h-y, whoever carries a check that turns him back when he bolts, not whoever carries a swiftness of wit. The trace is walked about in and is not seen, and whoever had nothing in him to stop him went past.
