Commentary
This is the third verb in three verses built without a named agent: it is blown, it is opened, they are set moving. Three vast events, and not one of them has an actor in the wording. The whole scene happens, and nothing appears in it but what it happens to.
A mountain, from j-b-l, is a gathered mass that clings and stretches out in the ground. Its meaning in its letters is fixity by adhesion: what came together and then kept its place. From the same root comes the Arabic word for the disposition a creature was gathered upon and cannot leave. In the language, a mountain is the very figure of what does not move.
Then "they are set moving" falls upon it. Travelling, in s-y-r, is a continuous unbroken going along a course, and the doubled form intensifies and prolongs the act. The verb is built without a named agent: the mountains are made to move, they do not move themselves. What was described by its staying is walked away, and the one who walks it is not named.
Then the fāʾ grants no interval. They moved and they became. And the predicate is sarāb.
Sarāb, from s-r-b, is a running along a channel that opens out into the open ground. From it come the Arabic words for a burrow-path in the earth, for water that runs, and for one who goes forth on his way. A sarāb is what runs for the eye as water runs, with no water in it. The noun names the seen running, not the standing body.
Here the reversal completes. A mountain is a mass seen because it is there; a sarāb is a running seen although it is not there. The first is fixed in itself and fixed in the eye; the second passes in the eye with nothing underneath. What lies between the two states is not a loss of size but a shift of side: from the side of being to the side of appearing.
The verse before said "and it has become gateways," and this one says "and they have become a mirage." One construction, two facing directions: a barrier turned into a crossing, and a standing thing turned into a sight. What used to block was opened; what used to hold still was undone. And the eye that used to take its bearings from both is left able to see and unable to lean.
The figure of immovability is walked away by a hand the verse does not name, and what it turns into is not rubble but a shimmer: still visible, no longer there. Seeing survives; leaning does not.
Commentaire
ويُترجَم: «And the mountains are removed and will be a mirage».
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as describing the removal of the mountains on the day of resurrection: they are torn from their places, driven through the air, and then become scattered dust like a mirage seen as water with no water in it. To this the common account joins what is said about the manner of their pulverizing, and in recent times the verse is read against what is known of the movement of the earth's crust and turned into a scientific report. Rendered: "And the mountains are removed and will be a mirage."
A reading that describes the manner of the removal and carries the verse onto what is known about the earth.
A root-reading
Suyyirat (root s-y-r): a continuous unbroken going along a course; the doubled form intensifies and prolongs it, and the build without a named agent makes the mountains moved, not moving. Al-jibāl (root j-b-l): gathered masses that cling and stretch in the ground, the very figure of staying put. Kānat (root k-w-n): a condition settling and holding. Sarāb (root s-r-b): a running in a channel that opens into the open ground, and what runs for the eye as water runs with no water in it; the noun names the sight, not the body. The verse becomes: "The firmest thing one can point to is walked away, and its condition settles into being a sight with nothing carried underneath it."
A reading that hears a shift from the side of being to the side of appearing, and settles nothing about the manner of the removal.
The two readings do not conflict. The first describes the manner and looks for something to match it; the second stops at what the wording named: a moving with no mover, and a sight with no body under it. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
The verse sets two words of the same sensory family against each other: both are seen with the eye. A mountain is seen and leaned upon; a mirage is seen and cannot be leaned upon. What is at stake is therefore not the cancelling of sight but its separation from reliance.
This matches what the Surah built at its head: people questioning one another and at variance, that is, building a verdict on what appears to them. Then the day of the parting arrives, and the first thing the eye takes its bearings from is drawn away: the barrier above it and the standing thing before it.
And whoever weighs the order finds the two verses working together: the sky is opened, so no roof is left to bound the looking, and the mountains are set moving, so no landmark is left to measure against. The upper side is thrown open and the earthly marker is lifted, and the onlooker is left without a ceiling and without a sign.
Perhaps the choosing of the mountain in particular points to a habit in the human being rather than to a report about the earth: that he takes the heaviest thing he can see as his measure of fixity and names by it whatever does not change. Earlier in this same Surah stood "and the mountains as pegs," where the mountain served as a marker of steadying. It may be that this passage comes to say that the measure itself is held up by another, so that what steadied other things does not own its own steadiness. It may be said that what is known today of the slow motion of the great masses agrees with this sense, and it may not be said, for the verse mentioned no cause, no manner, and no span, and settled nothing about the description of the earth or its motion. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse.
