﴾ They keep saying: are we really to be given back into the dug hollow (al-ḥāfira)? ﴿
Up to here the Surah has been describing and attaching its descriptions to no one: the wrenching ones, the loosening ones, the shaking one, the following one, the throbbing one, the slackened one. Feminine descriptions with no named thing described. Then the plural ending arrives on yaqūlūn and a group appears for the first time. It appears by no name; it appears by the fact that it is speaking.
Speech, from the root q-w-l, is a knot tied in the depth that then leaves the mouth still held by the one who said it. It departs and does not come loose. And the verb comes in the present form, not the past, and the present form renews an act instead of closing it: talk that is repeated, not a word said once and finished with. The first thing these are known by is that they say it again.
There is the interrogative a at the head of the clause, then inna, then the reinforcing lām on its predicate. Three pieces of emphasis are not the equipment of someone asking. A questioner keeps his wording light so it will leave room for an answer; a denier weights it so the door to an answer is shut. So this is the form of a question on its surface, and in its working it pushes away what comes after it.
Then the verse chooses for them a passive participle and not a verb. It does not report them saying "shall we return"; it reports la-mardūdūn, "given back". Returning, from r-d-d, is the bringing of a thing back to its first place and the fixing of it there, and the one who brings back is not the one brought back. In their own wording they stand where the act falls, not where it comes from.
And here what they are really pushing away comes into view. It is not the return by itself, but that the return should have a hand that performs it. The word they uttered carries an agent they did not name, and it is the heaviest thing in their saying, and it is against them.
Ḥ-f-r is a splitting that sinks into ground and runs on until it stays as a hollowed trace. From it comes the pit; from it comes the hoof that strikes ground and leaves its own strike in it; from it comes the Arabic saying "he went back in his ḥāfira", that is, he came back along the track he came by. So the ḥāfira is the road that the passing itself dug.
And the preposition is fī, "into", not ilā, "toward". Whoever goes toward a place reaches its edge from outside; whoever falls into a thing comes down inside it. What is spoken here is a going back that happens inside a trace already there: the walker put back into the hollow of his own steps.
And it is al-ḥāfira, on the same pattern as its sisters in these closing cadences: rājifa, rādifa, wājifa, khāshiʿa. It describes and does not name, so it stays a dug trace that one is brought back into, not a patch of ground that can be pointed at.
The group appears in the Surah for the first time by no name but by an act of speech, and yaqūlūn is a present form that renews the act and makes repetition their description, and q-w-l is a knot that leaves the mouth and stays held by its owner. Then three pieces of emphasis gather in their words, the interrogative, inna, and the lām, and in their working they push away rather than ask. Then la-mardūdūn, a passive participle, and r-d-d a bringing back to the first place and a fixing there, so they have set themselves where the act falls and have carried in their wording an agent they did not name. Then "into al-ḥāfira", and ḥ-f-r a sinking split that remains as a trace, with "into" setting the return inside the hollow rather than at its edge.
They denied being put back into the hollow their own steps dug, and they said it in a wording that brings the one who puts them back along with it.
