﴾ It is indeed the speech of a sent bearer, one kept precious. ﴿
The answer to the oath comes down weighted with two devices at once: inna at its head and the emphatic lām on its predicate. Emphasis upon emphasis, after four oaths have run before it.
And the thing spoken about is a pronoun whose reference the verse does not name. Further, the predicate itself does not say "it is such and such"; it says whose it is: "the speech of a bearer sent." The question of what it is has been answered by an attribution. Speech is known by the one who carried it.
And this is the sura's own measure in this stretch, for it comes back afterwards to deny another attribution: "and it is not the speech of a scattering power that drives far off, itself pelted away." The word is one and the same on both sides; the difference lies in what it is joined to.
The root q-w-l is a sound released connected, extending until it reaches a hearer. Speech, then, is what has gone out uttered and joined, not what stayed in the chest and never left it.
And r-s-l is a running that travels without stumbling and is then carried through to a destination. A rasūl, at its root, is a bearer in whom the arrival of the message is realized, not one who begins it. To attach the speech to him is an attachment of carrying, not of authorship: it is his speech because he is the one who delivered it.
And "a bearer" comes indefinite, with no name. The verse describes and does not identify, and the descriptions after it are all that the listener is given about him.
The root k-r-m is what is kept safe in its holding place without a hard grip and then goes out freely. From it, the choice part of a man's wealth, held back and then given; and the ground called karīma yields what is in it without withholding.
And this is the most exact thing a bearer can be described by: guarded but not clenched, holding what was deposited and then bringing it out entire. The being-precious here is not praise added onto the description; it is a condition for the carrying to be sound.
And with this description six of them begin, running to the end of the third of these verses: kept precious, owner of a strength, at the Holder of the raised canopy, firmly placed, obeyed, entrusted. They are read in the order they came, and none of them is brought forward that the verse put back.
The answer to the oath comes down with two devices of emphasis, inna and the lām. What is spoken about is a pronoun whose reference is not named, and the predicate does not say what it is but whose it is. The root q-w-l is a sound released connected until it reaches a hearer, so speech is what went out and not what stayed in the chest. The root r-s-l is a running that travels and is then carried through to a destination, so a bearer is one in whom the arrival is realized and not one who began what he carried, and the attaching is an attaching of carriage and not of authorship. And "a bearer" is indefinite, with no name, so the descriptions are all that is given. The first of them is karīm, from k-r-m: what is kept safe without a hard grip and then goes out freely, and this is a condition of the carrying and not praise laid upon it. Six descriptions begin here, and all of them say one thing: that the speech arrived as it was sent.
