﴾ You would tell apart, in the faces they turn toward things, the bloom that belongs to that softness (naʿīm). ﴿
The speech had been about them; now it is addressed to you. "You would tell apart" is a verb for a single person spoken to, dropped into the middle of the scene to give the reader a task inside it. The people are not merely described to you; you are stood where you can pick them out.
And the verb is taʿrif, from ʿ-r-f, a depth that runs on until it opens out and distinguishes. It is not seeing. You can see what you have never seen before; you can only recognize what you already have some acquaintance with. The verse does not say "you see in their faces"; it says you know them again. The mark is legible to whoever knows what it is a mark of.
The face, wajh from w-j-h, is a directedness that gathers and shows itself lightly, the side with which a being turns wholly toward what is in front of it. It is the most forward-facing thing in a person and the least able to hold a cover.
And the preposition is "in", not "on". What is spoken of here is not a layer laid over the face but something standing inside it and rising to its surface. In this same Surah the opposite happens with the other preposition, where what people kept earning settled over their hearts as a film. There a covering rides down onto an inside; here a wetness climbs from the inside out. Two traces on two surfaces: one hides, the other discloses.
Naḍra, from n-ḍ-r, is a welling from within that spreads out heavily and then runs along the surface until it glistens. It is a watering, not a coat of paint; nothing blooms on the outside that was not watered in the depth.
Then comes the construction: "the bloom of the softness", not "the bloom of their faces." The face is where the trace lands, not what owns it; the bloom belongs to the softness, which sets it down where it can be read. And that is why "the softness" now carries its article, when two verses ago it carried none. It entered with no boundary; once its trace showed, it was known.
And you know it without having entered it. Its mark reaches you off the face of the one who did.
The address turns to a single person and hands him a task inside the scene: "you would tell apart", from ʿ-r-f, a depth that runs on until it distinguishes, and not "you see", since knowing again asks a prior acquaintance with the mark. And the place is "in the faces they turn", with "in" and not "on"; the face, from w-j-h, is the side with which a being turns wholly forward, so the trace stands inside it and rises, it is not laid over it the way what people kept earning settled over their hearts in this same Surah. And the bloom, from n-ḍ-r, is a watering that wells from within and then runs along the surface, and it is joined to "the softness" and not to the faces: the mark belongs to the one who sent it down, and the face is a page it is read off. And "the softness" takes its article two verses after it was left without one, so what was given no boundary when it was named was known once its trace appeared.
