﴾ and it gave ear to its Lord, and it was held to what was due of it. ﴿
It is the same. Not a word added, not a vowel altered, not a pronoun changed. It was said to the sky in the second verse and is said to the earth in the fifth, and between the two lie acts they did not share.
A repetition that alters not one letter says what variation cannot say. Had the earth been given a phrase of its own, it would have stood in the answer at a different station from the sky's. Since the sentence came out one, it is known that what is asked of the height is what is asked of the ground, and that the difference in what befell each of them does not change what is expected from each of them.
In the first direction this listening was preceded by an act that fell on the sky and that it did not own: "when the sky is split open." In this direction it is preceded by two acts that issued from the earth itself: "and it cast forth what is inside it and took on its own emptying." Two different roads ending at "gave ear."
So listening is not the wage of an act nor the outcome of a condition. The one taken and the one who gave both come to rest at the same word. And ʾ-dh-n is the opening of a channel through which whatever is permitted passes, and a channel does not ask what came before it.
The pronoun in "its Lord" belonged to the sky and now belongs to the earth. The word does not say "their Lord"; it repeats the relation for each one on its own. They are not folded into a single relation in which one of them would be lost inside the other, and neither is left without a relation of its own.
Rabb is from r-b-b: a clinging grip that grows what it holds. And what clings, clings to each thing singly, which is why the joining is repeated and not abbreviated. Everything is called by its own relation, not by its neighbour's.
In both places this word comes last. It opens no condition and stands between no two verbs; it closes what is before it. And ḥ-q-q is a fixing that cannot be shifted, so its position in the sentence resembles its meaning: what has been made fast has nothing built on top of it.
It is built for the object here as it was there, and the doer is dropped both times. And both times he is named two words earlier: "its Lord." He is listened to and then judged by, and the one who listens does not testify on his own behalf.
With this word both conditions are shut. Five verses of time, of act, and of listening, and then the address turns to the one not yet mentioned. The roof gave ear and the ground gave ear, and there remains one between them, called by the name of his kind.
The same sentence, letter for letter, for a different party: what is asked of the height is what is asked of the ground. One road came through being acted upon and the other through acting, and both end at the opening of an ear. The relation is repeated for each singly rather than joined into one, and the closing word, built for the object, drops the doer it named two words before. Two conditions are shut, and one hearer between them has still not been called.
