﴾ Keep guard over the prayers, and over the middle prayer, and stand up for God in sustained obedience (qānitīn). ﴿
The verse shows up in the middle of a legislative block on divorce, on widows, on the dower and on the waiting period, and the sequence stops all at once to command the prayer and the qunūt. This structural break is intended: the text asks the reader to lift his head from the laws of the house, and to remember that this same house holds its order only by a standing connection with God. The guarding is not the raising of the prayer alone; it is the care for its times, the soundness of its making, and its continuity. And "the middle prayer" is a prayer set in the middle of others, marked out by its position. And the qunūt is a standing in unbroken obedience, not a bare prayer and nothing more. This reminder, in the middle of the rulings of the household, says: do not run your houses by bare justice alone, but by a house of prayer inside every house.
The root ḥ-f-ẓ names the keeping and the unbroken watching, and from it come the keeper, the guardian and the kept. And the wording is "keep guard", in the form of mufāʿala, and not in the bare imperative of "guard". The mufāʿala form calls for an exchange, or for a continuity carried by repeated effort. That is: the prayer guards the one who prays, and the one who prays guards the prayer, a doubled equation, a servant who shields his prayer and a prayer that shields him. This wording lifts the guarding above the performance of a form: the guarding is a protection of the content, not the bare repetition of a shape.
The root ṣ-l-w in Arabic names the attachment and the keeping of contact, and from it comes ṣalāh, in the sense of the upright bond between the servant and his Lord. And "the prayers" is a plural of small number, applied to the five prayers and to every contact a person raises toward God, in company or alone. The text did not fix a number in explicit wording. This widening of the word protects the prayer from a numerical stiffening, and makes constancy the root of the matter.
The root w-s-ṭ names the place between two ends, and "the middle community" at verse 143 is derived from it. So the middle prayer is a prayer in the middle between two prayers, holding a distinct structural position. And the reserve about pinning down which prayer it is argues for its preference without cancelling the centrality of them all: God did not name it, so that people would take care of them all in the hope of catching it. This divine withholding is a teaching move: singling out one prayer for people to take care of would turn it into a supplement above the rest of the prayers, so the grace widened as the possibilities about its identification widened.
The root q-n-t in its linguistic origin names an unbroken obedience and an upright standing before the one who is obeyed, and from it comes the qānit, the one who keeps at obedience in the silence of submission. And the standing here is not the bare uprightness of the body; it is the standing of the heart before the Lord. "For God" is placed ahead of "in sustained obedience" in the construction, and this fronting gives exclusivity: the qunūt is for God alone, not for a chief, not for a ruling power, not for a social custom. And the choice of "in sustained obedience" rather than "praying" or "remembering" is a precise intention: a prayer may be emptied of the heart, while the qunūt carries the presence of the heart at its very core.
This verse did not fall into the middle of the rulings of divorce and the waiting period at random. The rulings of the household press hard on the self: the man wants to hold on to his right, the woman wants her dignity back, and the community is watching. In such a climate the law is not enough to steady the souls. The text sinks the prayer like a trench between the rulings of parting and the rulings that follow them, the bequest and the provision, as though it were saying: if you want to be just inside your houses, begin with a standing before God. The justice of the household springs from taqwā, and taqwā feeds on the prayer.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: "keep guard" is a mufāʿala exchanged between the one who prays and his prayer; the prayer in its origin is an upright tie and not a bare rite; "the middle" one is marked out by its structural position, and the withholding of its name is a teaching move; the qunūt is the standing of the heart before the standing of the body; and the position of the verse in the middle of the rulings of divorce declares that the justice of a household stands straight only by a house in which the prayer is raised before God.
The verse is a deliberate break in the heart of the heavy rulings of the household, to say that justice inside a house does not stand straight by law alone but needs a tie to God. The root ḥ-f-ẓ in "keep guard", in the mufāʿala form, is an exchange between the prayer and the one who prays: the prayer shields the person and the person shields the prayer. And the root ṣ-l-w in "the prayers" is an upright tie, a bond kept in contact between the servant and his Lord. And "the middle prayer" is left unnamed on purpose: the withholding teaches, and drives a person to take care of them all. And the root q-n-t in "sustained obedience" is an unbroken obedience with a present heart, unlike an empty performance of a form; and the fronting of "for God" gives exclusivity: the qunūt is for God alone, not for a ruling power and not for a custom. And the position of the verse is a screen between the rulings of parting and what follows them of provision and bequest, as though the text were saying: whoever wants to be just inside his house, let him begin with a standing before God.
