﴾ And if you are in fear, then on foot or riding; and when you are secure, keep God in active attention as He taught you what you did not know. ﴿
After the verse before it commanded the guarding of the prayer and the qunūt, this verse takes up the exception: what happens if the fear comes? If a person is on a field of battle, or in flight from an enemy, does the prayer fall away? The text says: no, it adapts. Pray on foot, walking on your own legs, or riding, on the horses and the camels and whatever carries you, in whatever direction you are moving. The prayer is not a rigid mould; it is a bond with God that bends with the state. Then, when the fear has gone and safety has come back, return to the full remembrance as your Lord taught you. The verse settles the presence of the prayer across every state a person passes through: safety opens the prayer of completion, fear opens the prayer of ordeal, and the bond does not fall away in any state at all.
The root kh-w-f names the expectation of a harm that may come, not the harm that has landed. So fear is a forward-looking state of the soul that alerts to danger, and its source may be an enemy, or a natural panic, or a flight from injustice. The text did not fix the kind of fear, so that it would take in all its cases: the soldier in the battle, the farmer under siege, the traveller pursued, the survivor of an earthquake. All of them come in under this ruling. The text opened the door of the dispensation to them all, and not to a single case alone.
"On foot" is the plural of the one walking on his two feet, and the root r-j-l is tied to the leg, the limb and the one who moves upon it. And "riding" is the plural of the rider, from the root r-k-b, which names the mounting upon the back of something, animal or made, that carries him. The pairing here is intended: one who prays walking, and one who prays mounted. The complete prayer needs a stillness of the body, so when the stillness is taken away by a compelling cause, the prayer itself stays but without the stillness. This principle applies today to the car, the aeroplane and the train when getting down is impossible: the prayer does not fall away, it turns into its moving shape.
The root ʾ-m-n stands opposite to kh-w-f, and although safety is the original state, the text joined the safety to the fāʾ of consequence: "and when you are secure, keep God in active attention". That is: the lifting of the fear calls at once for the return to the full remembrance. The dispensation is conditioned upon the fear, so when its condition falls away it falls away with it. This flexibility inside worship sets straight an important rule: dispensations do not turn into habits, they stay as remedies for exceptional states. Whoever makes the dispensation of fear his standing prayer, even in safety, empties the text of its content.
The root dh-k-r here carries the sense of the complete prayer and not the bare glorification of the tongue, on the evidence of the context, which is the context of the prayer. And the root ʿ-l-m names the taking in of a known thing, and taking it in down to its detail. And the phrase "as He taught you" draws a taught reference for the prayer: the prayer is not a personal invention, it is a shape handed down from the taught revelation. This insistence protects the prayer from an individual distortion: no one devises a prayer out of himself and then claims for it the name of a remembrance of God. The lawful remembrance is the one taught, as He taught you.
The close settles that the shape of the prayer, the standing and the bowing and the prostration and the recitation and the qunūt, is a knowledge that came down with the revelation, and not a form a person invents by his own inclination. And the text's choice of the phrase "what you did not know" settles a teaching principle: sound worship is not a bare stirring of feeling, it is a knowledge learned from the revelation. Safety calls for the return to this taught knowledge, and not to a private exertion of one's own.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the fear is a state that changes the shape of the prayer and not its existence; "on foot or riding" is a prayer that adapts to movement; the safety returns the prayer to its completion; "as He taught you" bars the invention of a prayer out of the self; and "what you did not know" settles that the lawful prayer is a learned knowledge and not a free feeling, so the role of knowing, the learning of the taught shape, precedes the choice made in worship, the remembrance.
The verse completes the sense of 238: the prayer does not fall away with the fear, it adapts. The root kh-w-f in "you are in fear" is the expectation of harm, and the exceptional state that changes the shape and not the reality. And the root r-j-l in "on foot" is the one walking on his two feet, and the root r-k-b in "riding" is the one mounted on the back of a carrier; and this pair takes in every shape of movement in every age. Then the root ʾ-m-n in "you are secure" comes with the urging fāʾ of consequence: "and when you are secure, keep God in active attention", so the lifting of the fear calls at once for the return to completion; and the dispensation is bound to its condition, so when the condition goes, it goes with it. And the root dh-k-r in "keep in active attention" is the complete prayer in all its forms and not a bare glorification. And the reference "as He taught you" bars the devising of a private prayer outside the taught shape. And the close, "what you did not know", founds a principle: sound worship is a knowledge learned from the revelation, and not a free feeling.
