﴾ Allah bears witness that there is no god but He, and so do the angels and those possessed of knowledge, He who holds all together in equity. There is no god but He, the Unassailable, the Wise. ﴿
Witness, shahāda, from sh-h-d, is a spreading that reaches a present breath and then holds firm and is made exact: a presence that becomes a declaration, not a report carried in from elsewhere. The doer, first of all, is Allah. The witness begins from the Source disclosing itself in its own traces, not from an outside observer reasoning his way toward the Source.
The content of the witness is "there is no god but He." The negation clears the field of every claimant to godhood, and the exception settles it upon "He." Oneness is built by denying the list itself and then affirming the single reference, not by adding one more to a list.
The connective joins the angels and those possessed of knowledge to Allah's name in the act of witnessing, without making their witness the source of the truth. Theirs is the answer given by the one who has witnessed to the origin, answering the origin's witness to itself. "Possessed of" indicates company and firm hold: knowledge is something with which they have come to have a standing bond, not an item of information carried in from outside.
Knowledge, ʿilm, from ʿ-l-m, is an emerging out of depth that attaches and extends and then gathers and clings, that is, a disclosure that reaches the structure and so changes its stance. This is why those who have knowledge come forward as witnesses: what they knew became a standing word raised upon what was disclosed to them, rather than staying in the mind.
"Holding all together" is an active participle from q-w-m, a holding of a thing gathered from within until it stands firm, so the structure is kept gathered and does not come undone. The participle presents a continuing active nature, a standing that is not cut off from the witness. The bāʾ in "in equity" ties this standing to the balance it carries.
Equity, qisṭ, from q-s-ṭ, is a decisive line that extends in a flow and then reaches its completion and slips free of any leaning; it is the giving of each side its own place with no swerve. So oneness in this verse is a Source standing upon the setting up of balance, not an abstract proposition. Whoever witnesses to it cannot cut it off from equity.
The negation and the exception come back and close the verse with what opened it, and then the two descriptions arrive. The Unassailable, from ʿ-z-z, is an emerging out of depth that drives forward and shakes and then redoubles its own drive, so its force is inaccessible, not to be encompassed and not to be overcome. The Wise, from ḥ-k-m, is a warm living holding that then shuts in and cuts, and then gathers the decision and fastens it to its place.
Might does not turn tyrannous at the close, because it is paired with wisdom, and wisdom does not stay an idea without power, because it is paired with might. Between the two descriptions "holding all together in equity" comes to rest: a power able to hold the balance up, and a wisdom that puts every thing in its own place.
The witness begins from Allah and extends to the angels and to those possessed of knowledge, and its content stays one: the denial of every absolute reference and the affirming of "He." Yet the verse does not leave oneness in the space of speech; it describes Him as "holding all together in equity," a continuing active nature that sets the balance up. The Unassailable then carries the power of that holding, and the Wise carries its exact placement; true witness, then, is a knowing that becomes a balance.
