﴾ The binding way with Allah is surrender into wholeness. Those given the Book did not divide except after knowledge had come to them, out of grasping rivalry between themselves. Whoever covers Allah's signs, Allah is swift in reckoning. ﴿
The sentence opens with emphasis, and the binding way (dīn) is its subject. From d-y-n, the word denotes a fixed holding that lasts until its effect breaks out from within: a bond in which the act, the response, and the final reference fall into one order, not a sign-board cut loose from conduct. The phrase "with Allah" puts the measure of this bond at the Source, not at the name a group gives itself.
The predicate is the handing over into wholeness (al-islām). The root s-l-m gathers a flow that attaches and extends and then knits together into one whole. Soundness is the way out of being splintered, and handing over is the letting go of resistance to the Source until the direction knits together again. In making the accepted bond an act of handing over that returns the structure to its own soundness, the verse is not drawing up an identity card.
Division, from kh-l-f, is a loosening that extends and attaches and then drives through and separates, so each side comes to stand behind a direction other than the one the other has taken up behind it. The eighth form makes the drawing apart an act in which the selves were themselves involved, not a state that fell upon them with no part of their own in it.
The verse denies that the division came before the knowing: "except after knowledge had come to them." Knowledge, from ʿ-l-m, is an emerging out of depth that extends and attaches and then gathers itself in the one who holds it. The disclosure came to them, and then the splitting happened. So the verse dates the division to what followed the knowledge, and inside the same clause it keeps the presence of disclosure earlier than the split.
The verbal noun "out of grasping rivalry" uncovers the inward drive. Baghy, from b-gh-y, is an attachment that takes hold of a covered depth and then stretches out asking for what lies past its own boundary, an asking that steps out of its place and so becomes overreach and a claim to stand higher. The words "between themselves" make this grasping a movement inside the very space that ought to have joined them to one another.
The verse does not blame knowledge; it uncovers the possibility of its being used inside a rivalry. When disclosure becomes material for owning, what was meant to gather turns into boundaries that divide. This picture comes after the verse of the witness held in equity, so the difference shows between a knowledge that bears witness for the balance and a knowledge that grasping has entered.
Covering (k-f-r) is a laying over, and the signs are marks that point and that join what is seen to its source. Whoever covers the mark does not destroy it; he only keeps himself from reading its direction. The linking particle before "Allah is swift in reckoning" ties the covering to its answer with no interval in between to give the illusion of escape.
Reckoning, ḥisāb, from ḥ-s-b, is a living holding that extends in a flow and then attaches and takes hold of every single element, that is, a gathering that draws deeds together with their outcome and lets nothing fall away. Calling it swift leaves neither the grasping nor the covering an interval that would carry them out of the balance: what came apart in the illusion is gathered in the account.
The binding way with Allah shows itself in the handing over, a surrender that carries the structure out of being splintered and into soundness. Facing it, the verse lays out the structure of division after knowledge: the disclosure came, then grasping entered among those who carried it, and the field of connection turned into contested boundaries. Whoever covers the signs does not cancel their direction, because the reckoning gathers what the grasping scattered. So the handing over and the division stand at two ends: a knitting together through surrender, and a splintering through the demand to stand higher.
