﴾ Then his Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) gathered him to Himself, and turned toward him, and guided. ﴿
The opening particle marks order with an interval; it is neither the conjunction that simply joins nor the particle that follows on at once. So between the end of the verse before and the beginning of this one there is a wait, and its length is left untold.
Three verbs then follow one another, linked by a particle and a conjunction that leave no interval at all. The waiting lies at the entrance alone, and what comes after it runs on unbroken.
This verse contains no act belonging to the one spoken of before it. It has three verbs with one doer, and he is not the one who disobeyed.
The verse before it said ﴿وَعَصَىٰ آدَمُ رَبَّهُ﴾: the word for his Rabb stands there in the accusative, as the object.
Here the verse says that his Rabb gathered him: the very same word stands in the nominative, as the subject, annexed to the very same pronoun.
One word across two adjacent verses, object in the first and subject in the second. This is the Surah's answer to the verse before it: the wording of the disobedience is left unaltered, while the position of the one disobeyed is turned over, from an object that is disobeyed into a subject that gathers.
Gathering, in j-b-y, denotes the drawing of what is scattered into a place that holds it. The cistern takes its name from it, being the place into which water is gathered so that it is not lost.
It stands here on the reflexive pattern, which returns the act to its doer: He gathered him to Himself.
All that came before it in this passage is a coming-apart: a charge that slipped away, a resolve that was not found, and a going wrong that carries its man down. So the one for whom nothing was found to hold him is gathered to the one who holds.
"His Rabb" is from r-b-b: a continuous attending that carries the attended from one state into another. So the noun itself conveys the carrying over of a state before any verb of carrying is named.
The particle follows on the gathering, and the returning falls second. The order is explicit in the wording: a gathering, then a turning; not a turning, then a gathering.
This is an order that is read and not reversed. The verse lays down no returning on the servant's part as a condition before the gathering, and names no act at all for him.
Turning, in t-w-b, is the letting go of a course that was being held, and a returning that stretches back to what was left. Its doer here is the doer of the gathering.
It is carried by a preposition of descent. So the returning comes down upon him from above and does not go out from him.
The conjunction joins the third verb to what comes before it, and a verb closes the verse with no visible object. The verse then ends, and the last verb has nothing on which it falls.
The verse does not say "and He guided him." The object is dropped and the verb is left bare, with no named side toward which one is guided.
This shape has appeared in this Surah before: ﴿ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ﴾, with two verbs before it taking two objects, and then a third verb with none. The word is the same and the position is the same: last of three, and bare.
Guidance, in h-d-y, is a hidden pointing that steadies a direction and stretches out along with the one who walks. It accompanies him, and it is not handed over.
The three verbs of the verse stand in an order: a gathering to Himself, then a returning that comes down, then a pointing that goes on with him. The first holds the first place, and it is not put after.
