﴾ He said: go down from it, the two of you, all together; some of you an enemy to some. Then if a guidance should come to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will not go astray and will not come to hardship. ﴿
An imperative ascribed to the dual ending, that is, a command to two, is followed by a circumstance that gathers. The number has returned to the two after the singular of the verse before it.
Going down, in h-b-ṭ, is a descending that ends in a spreading out at a resting place. It is a coming down that settles its man, not a falling that passes through.
"From it" is a pronoun that refers back to the place named in this passage without repeating its name.
"All together" is a circumstantial accusative from j-m-ʿ, which denotes the drawing of what is scattered until it knits. So the circumstance gathers what the number had divided.
The plural pronoun falls four words after the dual ending, a plural standing in the very same verse as a dual. Two are commanded, and a company is addressed.
So the number in this one verse runs through three consecutive stages: a dual in the verb, then a circumstance that gathers, then a plural pronoun in the clause after it. This is the last of the shifts in the passage.
"An enemy" is an indefinite singular predicate, the very word that was used six verses earlier: ﴿
Between the two places the difference lies in where the enmity sits, not in the word for it. There, an enemy is pointed at from outside the two of them; here, the enmity is among them themselves.
There the preposition was repeated, so that each of them was singled out by it; here there is one preposition, entering upon an indefinite, "to some." So the other party is left unfixed.
Then comes a strengthened condition, with an indefinite that comes. The conditional particle is a particle of supposal with another joined onto it, and the verb of the condition is strengthened by a heavy energetic ending. So the condition is a supposal in its form, while the possibility of its happening is strengthened in its wording.
The verb is one of coming, not of giving. The guidance comes to them, and the verse does not say that they go seeking it.
"From Me" is placed before the subject. The side is known before the one who comes is known, and the side is a first-person pronoun, not an outright noun.
"A guidance" is indefinite, coming with no article, no annexation and no description.
Earlier in this passage there had been another offering of a pointing: ﴿هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ﴾. That was an offer put as a question by a speaker present on the spot; this is a coming, under a strengthened condition, from a side named by its own pronoun.
The indefinite is made definite by annexation two words later. "A guidance" in the condition is indefinite, and "My guidance" in the answer is annexed to the speaker's own pronoun: it came unfixed and became known by its relation to the one it came from.
"Follows" is from t-b-ʿ, on the reflexive pattern. The root denotes a letting slip followed by a catching up and a clinging, and the pattern adds to it the taking on of that following and the seeking of it.
So what is stipulated in the answer is a work the follower performs, while the first condition is a coming that befalls him: a coming from there, and a following from here.
Two denials follow, in a shape that has already appeared in the Surah, with the negative repeated before the second of them. Going astray, in ḍ-l-l, is a going off into an openness that no path bounds; hardship, in sh-q-w, is a tightening labour joined to its bearer so that it does not leave him.
So the first thing denied is a going off from the path, and the second is a weariness that keeps hold. One of them lies in the walking, and the other in the walker.
This very shape appeared in this Surah before: ﴿لَّا يَضِلُّ رَبِّي وَلَا يَنسَى﴾, with one first verb identical letter for letter, then a second denial joined to it by a repeating of the negative.
There it was denied of the Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), and here it is denied of the follower of His guidance: one sentence on one shape, in two settings far apart.
Here the thread of hardship is closed. This material occurs in the Surah three times, with no fourth. The first was at its opening: ﴿مَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ لِتَشْقَىٰ﴾, a denial made of the bearer of the Book.
The second was in this passage: ﴿فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقَىٰ﴾, a warning with no denial in it.
The third is this one, a denial made of everyone who follows. So what was denied of one man at the Surah's opening is denied, at the close of this passage, of everyone who comes after the guidance, and between the two of them stands a warning that it might happen.

With this the thread of hardship is closed: it was denied at the Surah's opening of the bearer of the Book, warned against in this passage, and denied here of everyone who has come after the guidance. Three places, and no fourth.
Il y eut dans ce groupe une autre offre d'indication : ﴿هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ﴾.
Cette forme même s'est tenue dans cette sourate auparavant : ﴿لَّا يَضِلُّ رَبِّي وَلَا يَنسَى﴾.
La première à son ouverture : ﴿مَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ لِتَشْقَىٰ﴾, négation dite du porteur du Livre.
La seconde dans ce groupe : ﴿فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقَىٰ﴾, un avertissement sans négation aucune.
