﴾ So the two of them ate from it, and what they keep covered showed itself to them, and they set to laying over themselves out of the leaves of the garden. And Adam disobeyed his Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), and he went wrong. ﴿
A particle of sequence is followed by a past verb ascribed to the dual ending: the two come back after four places of the one, for the address before it had been singular in four consecutive places.
He whispered to one, and two ate. The number shifts across this passage in an order that is to be read: a forbidding of the driving out of two, then hardship for one; then sufficiency for one; then a whispering to one; then an eating by two.
"From it" is a pronoun that refers back to what stood in the verse before, without repeating its name. What was named inside the speaker's mouth is left unnamed in the verse's own report.
The preposition apportions: they ate a part, not the whole.
A second particle of sequence follows, with a showing that is bounded by the one it showed to. No gap lies between the eating and what came after it.
Showing, in b-d-w, denotes the coming out of what was covered into open sight. The verb is intransitive, and it has no doer but the thing that showed.
It is carried by a preposition to the dual pronoun, "to them." So the showing is bounded by the two of them, and the verse does not say that it showed to anyone besides them.
"What they keep covered" is from s-w-ʾ: a trace that seeps through until it reaches a thing and then shuts over it. The noun itself identifies what it names by the shutting laid over it, so its showing is the coming undone of that shutting.
The verse gives no description of what showed and does not fix what it is. The name indicates that it belongs to what is kept covered, and goes no further.
Then comes a verb of setting out, followed by a verb that renews itself. "They set to" is a verb of beginning, and its predicate is a verbal clause in the imperfect: what is told is the starting of the act and its continuing, not its completion.
"Laying over" is from kh-ṣ-f: the drawing of one layer onto another by a piercing that repeats itself through a slit. The patching of a sandal, one piece shut down upon another, comes from the same root.
So what is told is a work gone over again and again, not one motion. The verb has no visible object in the verse; there is only a side that is laid upon and a material that is laid from.
The side is "over themselves," the dual pronoun for the third time, and the material is "out of the leaves of the garden," with the apportioning preposition: some of the leaves, not all of them.
Leaves, in w-r-q, are a thin spread thing joined to its own stem. So what they covered themselves with is the finest thing in the place and the nearest to hand.
A conjunction follows, then a past verb ascribed to an outright, named subject, and the verse is read as it stands. The singular returns after three dual pronouns in the same verse.
The verse does not say "and the two of them disobeyed." The verb is ascribed to one, called by his own name, after he had stood in the verse as a pronoun alongside another.
Its object is "his Rabb," annexed to his own pronoun. The one disobeyed is identified by his relation to the one who disobeyed, and by no other name.
Disobedience, in ʿ-ṣ-y, is a hard, fixed going-out from obedience, its root sense being the holding of a course so that one is not bent away from it.
Then come a particle of sequence and "he went wrong." Going wrong, in gh-w-y, is the opening of a hollow that carries the one in it down and keeps carrying him. The second rests on the first through a particle that allows no interval.
This verse is read as it stands. It holds an outright verb, a named doer, an annexed object, and a result joined by a particle that does not wait. Nothing is brought in upon it from outside to soften it, and no word of it is turned away from where it sits.
The Surah's answer to it lies in the verse that follows, not in a reinterpretation of this verse. Whoever wishes to know what this Surah says on the matter should read what comes after it, and should leave what is in it unchanged.

The Surah's answer lies in the verse that follows, not in a reinterpretation of this one.
