﴾ Gardens of settled dwelling, with the rivers running from beneath them, staying in them. And that is the recompense of the one who purified himself. ﴿
The word stands in the nominative, in apposition to "the highest degrees". The ranks were first described by their height, and then they were named.
This reverses what happened in the other pan: there the name came down bare and was not described, while here the description came down first and the name followed it.
"Gardens", from j-n-n, denotes a holding-in within a hollow that screens. It is therefore a density that closes around whoever enters it, not open space.
The gardens were annexed to an indefinite noun: the verse says "gardens of ʿadn", with no article, rather than "gardens of the everlasting" or "the high gardens".
The root ʿ-d-n is a joining that fixes under pressure and then holds inside the hollow. From it comes the verb said of one who keeps to a place and does not leave it, and from it the word for what settles in the depth until it has become part of it.
So the annexation says what these gardens are, not where they are: gardens of keeping, not gardens of a halt that is moved on from.
The verse says "from beneath them", not "beneath them" alone, nor "in them". "From" begins a limit, so the place is the source of the running, not its vessel.
"The rivers", from n-h-r, is an issuing from an interior that empties out running and then draws on. In its root, then, a river is what came out of an inside and extended.
The running is in the imperfect, not the perfect, which makes the clause a circumstance that keeps renewing rather than a report of something that happened once and is over.
The condition entered singular and the answer came out plural, and here the plural stays on as an accusative circumstantial: "staying" is said of many, not of one.
Staying, from kh-l-d, is a penetration that attaches and is held and then set fast under pressure. It is therefore the knotting of a condition, not the length of a span on its own.
"In them" returns to the gardens, not to the rivers; the adverb is for the dwelling, not for what runs beneath it.
The condition had been a state and a record: "in trust", and "having already done the works that set right". When the summing came, neither of the two was repeated; the verse said instead "the one who purified himself".
"Purified himself" is on the reflexive pattern, which turns the act back upon the one who does it. The verse does not say that another purified him; he did it to himself.
The root z-k-w is a sharp piercing run that is cut off from its place, goes out, and then opens onto what lies past it. Purifying oneself is thus a letting-out at a limit, and what is left after the letting-out is what grows.
"That" is a demonstrative of the far: it gathers all that has gone before and then calls it a recompense. In the other pan the word recompense did not occur at all; there, a belonging that stays with its owner, and here, a measure cut off and made to run to the one it is due to.
The word stands in the nominative, in apposition to the highest degrees, so the ranks were described first and named afterwards, in contrast to the other pan, where the name came down bare with no description. "Gardens", from j-n-n, is a holding-in within a hollow that screens, a density that closes around, not an open space. It was annexed to an indefinite, "ʿadn", from ʿ-d-n, a joining that fixes and then holds inside the hollow; so the annexation says what they are and not where they are, gardens of keeping and not gardens of a halt that is moved on from. "From beneath them" begins a limit and does not mark a container: the place is the source of the running rather than its vessel, "the rivers", from n-h-r, is what came out of an interior and extended, and the verb is imperfect and keeps renewing. "Staying" holds on to the plural with which the answer came out in the verse before it, and staying, from kh-l-d, is the knotting of a condition, not a length of span. Then the summing comes with a third word that never occurred in the condition, "the one who purified himself", on a pattern that returns the act to its doer; the root z-k-w is a letting-out cut off at a limit which then opens onto what lies past it. Finally "that" gathers everything that went before and names it a recompense, a word that was never said in the opposite pan.
