❮ A fixed number of days. Whoever among you is ill or on a journey, an equal number of other days. Upon those who can only take it with difficulty, a redemption: feeding a person in need. Whoever volunteers more, it is better for him. And that you fast is better for you, if only you knew. ❯
The nucleus y-w is a motion that breaks out and stretches, and the mīm seals it with compacting; so a day is a bounded lit span upon which the daytime stands. And ʿ-d-d, whose nucleus is ʿ-d, is an ordered following on, and the doubling adds plain order to it; so counting is a tallying that follows one behind one. And the choice of "maʿdūdāt", the feminine plural of fewness as an adjective of the days, rather than "maʿdūda" or "kathīra", sets the hearer before a small number open to immediate tallying. This choice breaks the weight of the ruling before the command has begun: fasting is not a long torment but a short reckoned drill.
The fāʾ branches the ruling of licence off the ruling of obligation. The nucleus m-r is a slackened moving, and the ḍād gathers softness and loosening into it; so illness at the root is not confined to bodily pain but takes in the weakening of will and of body away from standing up to a thing. And s-f-r, whose nucleus is s-f, is an uncovering and a pushing back of the veil, and the rāʾ conveys renewal; so travel is a renewed uncovering out of a known setting into another, and from it "the woman unveiled" for her uncovering. And "ʿalā" attaches itself to the journey and not to the illness, since a journey is a state a person rests upon for a stretch, while illness is a description standing in him. And the wording "an equal number of other days", rather than "let him break the fast and let it fall away", keeps the reckoning whole; ʿ-d-d itself does not change, only its place moves from days to other days. The licence is a postponement, not a cancelling.
"ʿAlā" conveys the settling of the ruling upon its bearers heavily, as in "upon him a debt". And the nucleus ṭ-w is a curved rounded stretching, while the qāf adds tight fastening; so a ṭawq is what encircles the neck as a ring that will not be pushed aside, and iṭāqa is the carrying of a thing until it reaches the furthest edge of the circle its bearer can hold. So "those who can only take it with difficulty" are not the generally able; they are those in whom fasting has reached the utmost of capacity, such as the very old, the nursing woman, and the chronically ill whose recovery is not looked for. And the nucleus f-d is the drawing of a thing out from under a binding by means of another, while the yāʾ points to continuing; so a fidya is a drawing out from under an obligation by a substitute that stands in its place. And the nucleus s-k is a stillness after motion, and the nūn seals it by settling it in place; so a miskīn is one in whom poverty has stood still until the state of need has set hard in him.
The nucleus ṭ-w is a curved stretching, as in ṭ-w-q, but the ʿayn here opens it onto self-consent; so ṭawʿ is a yielding that happens from inside the doer and not by an outward push. And the tafaʿʿul form "taṭawwaʿa" adds to that consent a chosen effort. So "whoever volunteers more" is one who wanted, out of himself, an increase upon the redemption laid down. Then comes the rhetorical repetition of the word "better" over three cases: volunteering is better, fasting is better, and the redemption too is better by implication, because it is a lawful choosing; the worth of the redemption is not denied, but fasting stays the higher side. And the close "if only you knew" does not address one ignorant of the rules; it addresses one who has not yet grasped that fasting is a drill for the role of guarding. Knowing here is the grasping of the effect, not the keeping of the ruling in memory.
So the word precedes the term and the role precedes the identity. The one who can bear it is not a title hung upon every able person, but a role fallen into by whoever has had fasting take him to the utmost of his capacity, so that he was given the choice between a redemption that draws him out from under the binding and a fast freely chosen that keeps him at the heart of the higher role.
The verse opens with "a fixed number of days", the feminine plural of fewness as an adjective of the days, the lightest numerical build in Arabic, and it breaks the press of the binding before the command has begun: fasting is a short reckoned drill and not a long torment. Then the cases divide on two axes. The first is the ill and the traveller, and the wording "an equal number" instead of "let him break the fast" discloses that the root ʿ-d-d does not change, only its place moves from days to other days; the licence is a postponement and not a cancelling. The second is "those who can only take it with difficulty": the root ṭ-w-q is a carrying until its bearer grazes the furthest ring he can hold, so these are not the generally able but those in whom fasting has reached the utmost limit. And the root f-d-y is a drawing out from under a binding by a substitute that stands in its place, while the one in need is he in whom poverty has set hard, by the root s-k-n. Then "better" comes three times to found a graded equation: volunteering is better, fasting is better, and the redemption is better for whoever has a right to it. And the close "if only you knew", in the shape of a condition, addresses the one who has not yet grasped that fasting is a drill for the role of guarding; knowing here is the grasping of the effect, not the keeping of the ruling in memory.
