❮ The month of Ramaḍān, in which the Qur'an was sent down as guidance for people and as clear proofs of guidance and discernment. Whoever witnesses the month, let him fast it. Whoever is ill or on a journey, an equal number of other days. God wills ease for you, not hardship, and that you complete the count, and that you magnify God for having guided you, and that you may be grateful. ❯
The nucleus sh-h is a loud showing that all people see, and the rāʾ conveys repetition and renewal; so a month is a repeated showing of the crescent that makes time watched in common and not privately. And the nucleus r-m is a hot motion inside a body, while the ḍād gathers into it a glow that burns whatever touches it; so ramaḍ at the root is a fierce heat that burns the stone and scorches it, and from it the scorching ground called ramḍāʾ. So the name of the month is no obscure devotional label; it carries the description of a holding back from appetites under a hot pressure that smelts the body and reshapes the will. Then the relative link "in which the Qur'an was sent down" chooses the passive form so as to throw the light on the act and not on the actor. The nucleus n-z is a descent from a height to what lies below, and the lām brings the descent to its appointed place; and the tafʿīl form in nazzala differs from anzala, the first conveying gradualness and the second a single whole. The verse here uses the summary "unzila", which points to the beginning of the descent within this month and not to its running through the whole of it. And q-r-ʾ, whose nucleus is q-r, is a gathering and holding with renewal, while the hamza cuts so as to bring out an audible sound; so the qurʾān at the root is a gathering that draws the signs together and comes out recited, not a silent book.
The verse is not content with one description of the Qur'an; it builds three graded layers. "Guidance for people" is a general description turning on the work of bringing through, with nothing singled out: the nucleus h-d is a gentle bringing through, and the yāʾ points to its continuing, so guidance is a continuing conduct that drives people toward a right place. Then "and as clear proofs of guidance" is a second layer inside guidance itself: the nucleus b-y is a parting with clarity, and the nūn settles the clarity inside what has been parted, so a bayyina is a divider that uncovers with plain clearness. From here, "clear proofs of guidance" is a visual detailing of the general guidance: it turns the summary direction into visible landmarks. Then the third layer, "and discernment": the nucleus f-r is a parting by separation, and the qāf tightens the parting with force, so the furqān is what parts truth from falsehood with force, and not a mere clarifying. So the Qur'an works on three levels: it directs, it details, and it discriminates.
The nucleus sh-h, the loud showing, has recurred, but the dāl here adds a settledness that draws out acknowledgement; so witnessing at the root is not bare looking, nor bodily presence alone, but a presence joined to an open acknowledgement of what was seen. So "whoever witnesses the month" is one who acknowledged its entry by sighting and by ruling, not one over whom the month passed without his heeding it. And the fāʾ in "let him fast it" is a fāʾ of consequence tying the ruling to the condition, while the lām of command moves the address over to the addressee himself, so that the ruling becomes an order he gives himself and not a bare report. Then the verse repeated the licence of the ill and the traveller in the very wording that came before it, not as a verbal repetition but as a confirming that the licence is no shortfall in the role: the standing of postponement holds even after the month has been singled out by its name.
The nucleus r-w is a going and coming, back and forth, and the dāl fixes that movement into a directed aim; so willing at the root is not a momentary attachment but an aim that goes back and forth and settles upon a goal, which makes the doubling, "wills ... and does not will", a logical confirming and not a redundancy. And the nucleus y-s is a softness that flows, while the rāʾ renews the softness; so ease is a renewed slackness that slides on with no resistance. Against it, the nucleus ʿ-s is a hardness that stands, and the rāʾ renews that hardness; so hardship is a repeated stiffness that hinders motion. This facing off at the root breaks the leaning that turns severity in worship into nearness: the verse states outright the negating of hardship as a divine will, so whoever hardens the fast upon himself with no cause has taken hold of the opposite of what is willed. And the bāʾ in "for you" is a bāʾ of contact, setting ease and hardship touching the addressed and not far from them.
The lām in "and that you complete" is a lām of purpose, and it joins four consecutive ends: completing the count, magnifying, acknowledging the guidance, and the hope of gratitude. The nucleus k-m is a compacting that closes upon what is inside it, and the lām carries it to the end of the ring; so completion at the root is the closing of a circle, and not an adding on after a thing is whole. From this, the count whose making up was laid down is no extra addition but the closing of a circle that the licence had opened. And the nucleus k-b is a thickened growing, while the rāʾ renews it; so magnifying is a renewed exalting of what has nothing like it, and not a bare word said. From this the magnifying comes after the completing of the month as an acknowledgement that the One who brought them through and gave them this drill is greater than to be repaid by the fast alone. Then "for having guided you": "ʿalā" conveys the settling of the favour of guidance over the addressed, holding there, and "mā" turns the act into a span. And the close "so that you may be grateful" ties the ladder to its head: the nucleus sh-k is a tightened holding and grasping, and the rāʾ renews it, so gratitude at the root is a continuing hold upon the favour that fixes it in its place, and not a passing word. And the hoping in "laʿalla" discloses that this binding is an outcome hoped for and not guaranteed by the bare outward act.
So the word precedes the term and the role precedes the identity. Ramaḍān is not a label put upon a month in a calendar, but a role fallen into by whoever witnessed the discernment come down into the hollow of his life, so he held his body back until the number was complete, and magnified the One who brought him through for having brought him through, until a gratitude arose in him that holds the favour in its place.
The construction "the month of Ramaḍān" is explicative and not adverbial: the month is defined by Ramaḍān. And the root r-m-ḍ is a burning heat that scorches the stone, so the name of the month is no empty ritual label but carries the sense of a holding back under a smelting pressure. And the root sh-h-r is a loud renewed showing of the crescent that makes time watched in common. Then the verse builds three layers to describe the Qur'an: "guidance for people", a general direction that drives gently; then "clear proofs of guidance", a visual detailing inside the general direction; then "discernment", a forceful cut between truth and falsehood. And witnessing the month, by the root sh-h-d, is not bare bodily presence but an acknowledgement of its entry by sighting and by ruling. And the pairing of ease with hardship breaks the leaning toward devotional severity: "God wills ease for you, not hardship" is a divine will stated outright, so whoever hardens matters upon himself with no cause has gone against what is willed. Then the four ends come joined by the lām: completing the count, by the root k-m-l, the closing of a circle and not an adding on after a thing is whole; then the magnifying, by the root k-b-r, a renewed growing that acknowledges the One who brings through to be greater than to be repaid by the fast alone; then gratitude, by the root sh-k-r, a continuing hold upon the favour that fixes it in its place, while the hoping in "so that you may" discloses that it is a fruit hoped for and not automatic.
