﴾ There was already a sign for you in two companies that met: one company fighting in Allah's path and another covering. They saw them as twice their number, with the eye's seeing. Allah strengthens with His support whom He wills. In that is a crossing lesson for those possessed of sight. ﴿
The particle qad opens the door of realization: the sign "was already," no longer an awaited possibility, and its place is "in two companies," not outside the scene. Fiʾa, from f-ʾ-y, denotes a gathering cut off at a boundary whose members then extend along one direction. This is why the verse can set up two distinct companies without turning the scene into scattered individuals.
Of the two companies the verse says that they "met." Meeting, from l-q-y, is an attachment that reaches a firm boundary and then extends its effect. Neither of them passed alongside the other; each came to stand inside the field of the second. The sign, then, lies in the moment when distance was cut off and difference became a facing.
The first company is presented through a running act and a course it runs in: "fighting in Allah's path." The verse does not say that fighting is its identity; it makes fighting an act falling "in a path," that is, inside a road that has a direction. The other comes as "covering," an active participle carrying the nature of covering as continuing in its stance.
The connective gathers the two companies into one scene, while the two descriptions keep the two directions from dissolving into each other. A meeting is not in every case evidence that what met is equal, nor does every facing cancel the path that carries one of its two sides.
The root of seeing returns twice, in "they saw them" and in "the eye's seeing." Seeing, from r-ʾ-y, is a current that cuts what it reaches and so fixes it, then carries it on into perception. Attaching the seeing to the eye shuts the scene inside outward perception: what is seen is taken as double, so the number itself becomes part of the sign.
The sentence does not halt at the eye's arithmetic: after it comes "Allah strengthens with His support whom He wills." Strengthening, from ʾ-y-d, is a force held in readiness that then drives forward and goes through, a pushing strength with which the doer is supplied. Support, from n-ṣ-r, is a sending forth that closes firmly and then runs on, an aid that reaches the one it is sent to and pushes exposure away from him. The eye counts, while strengthening brings into the scene what number alone cannot hold.
The lesson, ʿibra, from ʿ-b-r, is a grip that joins and crosses from one side to another. A lesson is a passage out of the picture of the two companies into a rule that the one who looks carries away with him, not a repetition of that picture. This is why it is reserved for "those possessed of sight": those whose seeing goes through the hardness of the surface to what runs behind it.
The eye is named in the middle of the verse, and sight at its close. The first sees the double; the second crosses from the double to the strengthening. A gaze that halts at the number shuts the sign inside its own picture, while a gaze that crosses understands why the scene was called a sign.
The sign was "in" two companies, that is, inside a meeting that removed the distance and left the difference standing: one company whose act runs in a path, another in which the description of covering goes on, and an eye that sees the number doubled. The verse then opens what counting cannot take in, a strengthening that holds firm through a support carried to the one upon whom the willing falls. This is why the verse is completed by a sight that crosses, not by an eye that sees. Number is the picture of the scene, and the lesson is the road by which the meaning gets out.
