﴾ Then whoever disputes with you concerning him after knowledge has come to you, say: come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us earnestly invoke and place Allah's curse upon the liars. ﴿
The contest over what has just been mentioned opens a condition. The opening connective ties this verse to the truth established in the one before it, and "whoever" then opens a condition that covers everyone from whom the act proceeds. Disputing, from ḥ-j-j, denotes a holding in which the channel narrows, then gathers, then stands out as an argument; the repeated final letter doubles the knot of the argument and its meeting by another argument. The mufāʿala form keeps the act running between two sides. The pronoun in "concerning him" keeps the subject of the quarrel tied to what came before, so what is contested remains the truth the previous verse established, and the door of the condition stays open to everyone in whom this act arises.
Knowledge here is at once a boundary in time and a measure. The condition falls "after knowledge has come to you." Knowledge, from ʿ-l-m, is what rises out of its own depth, fastens to the thing known, and is then gathered into a held mark. The point to be marked in this place is that knowledge arrives reaching the one addressed of itself: the verb "has come to you" assigns the movement to the knowledge rather than to a seeker of it, and "of" in "of knowledge" states the kind of thing that arrived. The disputing, then, falls after a held mark is present, not after a loose guess, and it is this order that carries the answer over from matching a word with a word to a summons that tests how truthful the standing positions are.
The symmetry leaves no one out, the caller included. The answer's connective brings the command "say," after which the saying asks the other side to draw near: "come." Calling, from d-ʿ-w, is an impulse that pushes through and rises out of the depth, then joins the one called by a link drawn long. The enumeration comes in matched pairs: our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves. In every pair "our" comes before "your", so the speaker asks for no cost from which he himself is absent.
After the gathering comes an uncovering within the calling. "Then" sets a space between the summoning and the act that follows their presence. Earnest invocation, from b-h-l, is a joining that opens an empty channel and empties the breath into it, then stretches on, fastened to its direction. The iftiʿāl pattern carries the entering of the doers into the act and their aim toward it, while the plural in "let us earnestly invoke" stays inclusive of all. The verse gives the whole structure of the summons in three movements: a call to draw near, then a matched gathering that both sides enter with what is nearest to them, then an invocation in which everyone falls under a single question.
The measure falls upon the description. The connective joins the invocation to the outcome it intends. Curse, from l-ʿ-n, is a fastening that rises out of the depth and then breaks outward, drawing a distance; it is joined to Allah, not owned by either side, and its place is "upon the liars." Lying, from k-dh-b, is a withholding that puts an image forward, one that cuts through sharply and then clings to its place as though it were fixed. "The liars" is an active participle, which makes lying a working nature that continues. So the sentence hangs the curse on the description itself, and the curse falls wherever that description is found; both sides enter the summons, each carrying his own word to one single measure.
The course begins with a dispute that comes after knowledge has arrived, so the arguing is not left open without a limit. The answer comes as a matched summons that brings in the sons of both sides, their women and their own selves, and then carries everyone out of disputing into earnest invocation. At the close, the curse is laid upon the liars, under a description that works and continues, not upon the name of a community. In this way the speech moves from an argument set against an argument to a scene in which each side carries its own word and puts itself under the measure of truthfulness.
