﴾ So We said: Adam, this one is an enemy to you and to your spouse. Let him not drive the two of you out of the garden, so that you come to hardship. ﴿
A particle of sequence is set upon the verse before it: a saying after a saying, and from the same speaker.
Then comes a call by the outright name. The two are not called, nor is the other, though she will be mentioned in this very verse.
So the address begins in the singular, and this is the first of the places in this verse where the number moves; the order of these moves is to be read.
He was named in the verse before, and here he is pointed at with "this one": the account is carried from a name to a pointing, so that he stands in the scene as one who is seen.
"An enemy" is a predicate, singular and indefinite. Enmity, in ʿ-d-w, is a firm standing-out from the depth that closes around the other party, a condition that presses down upon the one who faces it, not an act that falls once.
The preposition is then said again: "to you and to your spouse." Had the words been "to you two," the two of them would have been gathered under a single particle.
Saying the preposition again attaches the enmity to each one of them apart: an enemy to this one and an enemy to that one, not an enemy to the two of them taken together.
"Your spouse" is annexed to the one addressed and is not named. A spouse, in z-w-j, is the pairing of two who become one in the ruling; so the identifying is by the pairing, not by a name.
A particle of prohibition enters upon a verb whose subject is the absent one, and the verb is strengthened by a heavy energetic ending. In form it is a prohibition laid upon him, and in outcome a warning given to the two of them.
Its object is the dual pronoun, "the two of you." So the going-out that is feared is a going-out of two together, not of one.
Driving out, in kh-r-j, is a passing-through that ends in a visible standing-forth; here it stands on the causative pattern, meaning the moving of another from an inside to an outside.
"The garden," from j-n-n, is a hollow that contains what is in it and so screens it from whoever is outside it. The place is named by the screening itself, and to go out of it is to go out from cover into the open.
The particle is one of consequence and the verb after it is in the subjunctive, so what comes after it is built upon what came before it.
The verb is ascribed to a singular addressee: the two of them would go out, and one of them would come to hardship.
This move is to be read, not smoothed away. The verse has the dual form at its disposal and used it one word earlier, so turning away from it here is a choice.
What follows is joined to it, ﴿إِنَّ لَكَ﴾ and then ﴿وَأَنَّكَ﴾, both of them with the singular pronoun; the passage enters the singular and does not come back to the dual.
Hardship, in sh-q-w, is a tightening labour joined to whoever it falls upon so that it does not leave him. The material stands three times in this Surah, and it has no fourth.
The first of the three is at the Surah's opening, a denial made of the one it addresses: ﴿مَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ لِتَشْقَىٰ﴾. What was denied is that hardship should be the end of what came down.
This is the second of the three, and it alone is a warning against its happening, not a denial.
The third comes six verses later, a denial made of whoever follows the guidance. So the warning falls between two denials, and what was lifted from the bearer of the Book at the opening of the Surah is what is warned of here and what is lifted from the follower there.
A particle of sequence ties a saying to a saying from the same speaker, followed by a call by the outright name to one man in a setting that holds two. A pointing then follows a naming: he was named in the verse before and is pointed at here, so that he stands as one who is seen. "An enemy" is a predicate, singular and indefinite, and enmity, in ʿ-d-w, is a firm standing-out from the depth that closes around the other party, a condition that presses down, not an act that falls once. The warning falls between two denials.
