﴾ A returning-back (jazāʾ) that fits, edge to edge (wifāq). ﴿
Two words close the passage. It has run through a watch-post, a place of return, a staying on, a boiling heat and a seeping, five descriptions in a row, and then this word arrives and lays a single name over all of them.
The root j-z-y denotes a piece cut from one account that travels across and falls into another. From it comes the Arabic for a man repaid with what he did. In its root, requital is a transfer, not an invention: something that was on one side has moved to the facing side.
It stands as a bare verbal noun naming what preceded. In place of a fresh sentence such as "this is their requital," the noun arrives uncovered and settles on the whole scene: the scene itself is the requital.
The root w-f-q denotes the closing of two edges upon one measure, with neither exceeding the other. From it come the Arabic words for one thing matching another so that it lies flush upon it, for what equals another with nothing added, and for two parties meeting on one matter.
It is on the fiʿāl pattern, a verbal noun that requires two sides, since no one speaks of a fitting for a single thing alone. The word therefore affirms, in the wording itself, something else that this requital matches, though that other thing is not named here; the description points past itself.
What the verse chose to say deserves weighing. It did not say a great requital, or a severe one, or an abundant one: the word chosen lies outside the category of quantity altogether and belongs to that of correspondence. The scale in this word is an edge lying flush against an edge, not one pan sinking below another.
The passage closes on what it opened with. Its head was "the day of the parting," an edge that gives each part its bounds; its close is "a fitting," an edge that lies flush against an edge. A parting stands at the beginning and a matching at the end, and both are in truth the work of one edge.
Two words close five descriptions in a row. Jazāʾ, from j-z-y, is a piece cut from one account that travels to another and falls into it, whence the returning of a man's own act upon him. It came as a bare verbal noun in the accusative naming the whole scene, in which the watch-post, the place of return, the staying on, the boiling heat and the seeping are gathered under one name. Wifāq, from w-f-q, is the closing of two edges upon one measure, with neither exceeding the other, on the fiʿāl pattern, which requires two sides; the word thereby affirms something else that this requital matches, and that other thing is not named here. The requital is described neither as great, nor as severe, nor as abundant: the description chosen belongs to correspondence, not to quantity. The passage opens on a parting that gives each part its bounds and closes on an edge that lies flush against an edge, and the two are the work of one edge.
