﴾ Truly those of the open expanse (abrār) are, most surely, inside a settling softness (naʿīm). ﴿
This is the same structure that came three verses ago, inna followed by a lām above it, except that here the lām falls on fī rather than on a noun.
Fī is the particle of being inside. So the verse says that those of the expanse are within a softness, rather than that they have a softness they own. Ownership puts the thing in the hand, and containment puts the owner in the thing; holding water in the palm differs from standing in the river.
The verse, moreover, opens with inna and no connecting wa. The three verses before it were joined to the description of those standing over the human being; here the joining is cut and the speech begins afresh, and with that the preamble ends and a door opens onto two portions.
The root b-r-r denotes a surfacing that runs and extends; the doubling of the last letter doubles the extension and fixes it, yielding an opening that does not break off. From it comes al-barr, the wide uncovered land, set against the sea that is hemmed in.
So birr, in its letters, is a width rather than a category of deeds; outward and inward are alike within it, because a widening cannot be split into a face that is seen and a face that is put away. Whoever is narrow inside is wide outside only in appearance.
The word, further, carries the definite article: they are known and countable, unlike what was described in the verses before, indefinite and never identified. The same word returns in the same structure elsewhere: "No; the writing of those of the expanse is, most surely, in the heights." There it is their writing that is inside, and here it is they themselves; in both places the shape is one, something set firmly within something.
The root n-ʿ-m signifies an emission from a depth that settles into a place one can touch, that is, something that comes out of an interior softly and takes in whoever it comes down upon. From it comes nuʿūma, softness to the hand. So this naʿīm is a surface that does not graze, and not an abundance to be counted.
The pattern faʿīl fixes the condition and lifts from it any sense of passing: it is the settled state and not the momentary one, and they were not softened for a while and then returned.
The word arrives indefinite after a definite: the people are marked out, while what they are inside is not, being a width with no rim mentioned. Whoever has widening for a name is not set inside a space that can be measured.
The speech resumes without a connecting wa: the preamble of the keepers ends and a door opens onto two portions. The same shape of affirmation returns, inna with a lām above it, except that here the lām rides on a particle of containment, giving a people inside a softness, not a softness in the hand. Al-abrār comes from b-r-r, a surfacing that runs and extends, doubled by the doubled letter into an opening that does not break, a width in which outward and inward do not come apart, and they arrive definite after indefinites that were never identified. Naʿīm comes from n-ʿ-m, an emission that settles into a place one can touch and takes in whoever it falls upon, on a pattern that fixes the state, and it arrives indefinite after a definite. The people are known, and what holds them has no stated rim; it is width returned to the people of width.
