﴾ No indeed. The record of those who split the bound and run past it (al-fujjār) is in a holding that does not let go (sijjīn). ﴿
What comes before this verse is an open question, "Do such people not reckon that they are to be raised?", and then the scene of the day people are held together for the Lord of all domains. Then kallā arrives and cuts the road out from under the reckoning. It is not an answer of yes and not an answer of no. It is a check that stops the one estimating from estimating.
It is the first kallā in the Surah, and three more follow it. The word stands on a threshold: behind it a measure being shaved, in front of it a record being held. Whoever wants to know where the shaving comes to rest should listen to what follows the check.
The record is kitāb, from k-t-b: a fine confining that catches what would otherwise go off with the sound and fixes it, then opens and hands it out to whoever reads it. The same root names the stitching of a waterskin, sewn until its leaks are shut. So in the root a record is not a sheet of paper to be pictured; it is a manner of holding that stops seepage. And the possessive attaches it to them: their own record, not a document brought to them from outside.
Al-fujjār is from f-j-r: a splitting in a barrier out of which what was pent up bursts and then runs. From it comes fajr, the daybreak that splits the night so the light slides through, and the rock that bursts so its water comes out at once. In the root, then, such a one is not someone who lost the road but someone who split the bound and then let himself run on past it. And the fuʿʿāl form makes the splitting a settled trait rather than a slip.
An emphatic la, and then "in". So the record is contained, not spread open. Sijjīn is from s-j-n: a narrow constriction that shuts up inside a hollow and does not release what it holds. From it comes the word for a place of confinement that is not walked out of. The fiʿʿīl build doubles the middle letter and thickens that grip.
Here the facing is complete. A people whose trait is splitting, and their record inside what does not split. The barrier that was opened once and again is closed here upon their affair. Whoever made every bound open for him finds one bound that does not open.
And sijjīn comes indefinite, with no description attached. It is not made definite and not assigned to any quarter. The verse leaves it unspecified, then asks about it in the next verse, and then answers in the one after. The vagueness here is timed to two verses, and whoever waits those two verses has no need to fill the gap himself.
The verse opens with a check that shuts the estimating opened before it, then delivers its news doubly emphasized. The record (k-t-b) is a fine confining that fixes and then opens out, and it is theirs by attachment, not laid on them. Those named (f-j-r) are splitters of the barrier who run on past it, and daybreak itself is a split the light slides through. Then their record is set "in sijjīn" (s-j-n), a constriction in a hollow that holds and does not release, thickened further by the doubled build. Indefinite, undescribed, and about to be asked after by the verse itself. Whoever split every bound has his account come to rest in a grip that will not split.
