Commentary
This is the third thing sworn by: a thin rim first, then a covering that spreads over all, then a single light in the middle of the covering. The oath climbs three steps and never stands on anything fixed.
The root q-m-r denotes a binding that draws together into a visible edge and then runs on so as to recur. In its letters the moon is an edge that assembles and becomes plain, then comes back and assembles again, and not a body described by its size; what marks it out is that it is never seen once.
The moon is not sworn by absolutely; the oath is bound to "when," the same particle with which the Surah opened: "When the sky gives way and is split open." The Surah is hung on a time, and its oath is likewise hung on a time, and what is sworn by is a moment of the body, not the body itself.
Ittasaqa is from the root that stood in the previous verse. There, wasaqa was an act falling on something other than its doer, the night gathering what lies under it; here ittasaqa is built on the reflexive pattern, and the act turns back on the one who does it, the moon gathering itself. It is one root in two breaths, going out in the first and returning in the second.
The verse does not say "when it is complete," nor "when it grows great"; it says that it closed together until it came out even, with no visible shortfall left in it. Evenness, in this root, is the end of a gathering, not the beginning of a rest, and what has assembled in this manner has reached the far edge of its round.
The third oath is a light in the middle of the covering. Al-qamar, from q-m-r, denotes a binding that draws together into a visible edge and then runs on so as to recur, so what marks it is that it is never seen once. "When" then ties the oath to a moment, not to a body, and it is the same particle the Surah opened with. Ittasaqa, from w-s-q, is built reflexively, so the root that fell on another in the previous verse turns here upon its own subject: the night gathers what is under it, and the moon gathers itself. The sworn things are three, and every one of them is a state arrived at, not a state stood upon; there is nothing in the sky worth swearing by that is not on its way out of what it is in.
Commentaire
وتُترجَمُ: «And by the moon when it becomes full».
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as an oath by the moon when its light is complete. In the inherited reading ittasaqa is identified with the night of the full moon in particular, or with the evening-out of its light over three nights of the month, and the oath is taken as an exalting of the body's perfection on that night. Rendered: "And by the moon when it becomes full."
A reading that names the night and makes completeness itself the thing sworn by.
A root-reading
Al-qamar (q-m-r): a binding that draws together into a visible edge and then runs on so as to recur, so the word names what assembles and returns rather than a body described by its size. "When" ties the oath to a moment and not to an entity, and it is the particle the Surah opened with. Ittasaqa (w-s-q) is built on the reflexive pattern: the root that fell on something other than its doer in the previous verse turns here upon its doer, so the night gathers what is under it and the moon gathers itself. Evenness, in this root, is the end of a gathering and not the beginning of a rest. The verse becomes: "and by the returning edge when it closes upon itself and comes out even."
A reading that hears in the form the act turning back on its own subject, and in the evenness the close of a round rather than a station to stand in.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the night on which the light is complete; the second reads in the root a drawing-together that turns back on the one who does it. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
Three things sworn by, and not one fixed thing among them. A rim that does not linger, a covering let down and then lifted, an edge that closes and then wanes. The whole oath is built on what changes.
And the three acts in this oath are all acts of gathering. The twilight is a thinness bound into a narrow edge, the night gathers what lies under it, and the moon gathers itself. Three degrees of gathering, and what follows them is an answer about passing from one layer to another.
"When" has recurred here, and the Surah was opened with it. The opening hangs the speech on a time; the oath hangs its witnesses on a time. In this Surah the listener is given no single standing-place. He is carried from one time to the next.
Perhaps an instance of this may be sought in what is said today about bodies whose condition returns on a known measure: that what is seen of them at its fullest is not an end they have reached but a place in a round they pass through and leave behind, and that the human being has never built his counting on anything but such a return, never on something that stands still. It may be that this points to something: that choosing these three for an oath is choosing witnesses of the same kind as the thing witnessed to, since nothing but a thing in passage can testify to a passage. This is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse mentioned only a thing sworn by, a time, and an act of closing-together, and settled nothing about the description of any body or the measures of its return.
Tadabbur
