﴾ Those who covered the signals we sent, and said about them what did not match reality, are the ones who will keep company with the fire. They will stay in it long. ﴿
This verse opens the far slope of the one before it. Against "whoever follows My signal," with anxiety and roughness lifted off him, stands the one who covered the signal and then said about it what did not match. Covering, k-f-r at its root, is the covering of what has already come up, not a denial begun from nothing. The cultivator is named by that verb when he turns the soil back over the seed and buries it, and a dark night is named by it because it covers the day. So the one the Book calls by it is always the one the message reached and who buried it, never the one it did not reach. The two verses fit together on that hinge: in the one before, the coming of the signal was made certain, "whenever a clear signal comes to you from Me"; in this one, judgement falls on those who covered that signal after it had come to them. Covering presumes a prior knowing, and nothing gets buried that has not first come up.
The verse does not say only "those who covered." It adds "and said about them what did not match reality," and this is the joining of two stages, not a repetition of words. Kadhdhaba, from k-dh-b in the doubled form, doubles the distortion: besides bending the truth once, it denies its standing in front of others and carries the bent version out to them. The signs, āyāt, plural of āya, from the root ʾ-y-y, are marks that point past themselves to what stands behind them. So those described here buried the marks by covering, then spoke their opposite by calling them false: an inner act, burying, and then an outer act, a denial declared. The sentence names the one who concealed and then, on top of that, went out to attack the mark, not the one who has kept something concealed within himself. Requiring the two conditions together shields the innocent from suspicion and holds the judgement to those it was drawn for.
For what follows, the Book chooses "the ones who will keep company with the fire," not those who entered it and not those punished in it. Companionship, from the root ṣ-ḥ-b, is a lasting bond, firm and visible, not a passing visit: by it one companion is known through the other, the closeness named in the one who keeps close at the side. The verse attaches the fire to them as a companion, until the two are one thing, rather than attaching them to the fire as prisoners to a place. The outcome is generated from within and is not imported from without. Whoever spends a life burying what is sent to him is shaping, inside himself, a companion that will no longer come away; when the covering is lifted on the day of reckoning, what appears is simply what had been kept alongside all along. Recompense, in the Book, is the natural effect of what was made, not a penalty brought in from some side other than their own selves. Absolute justice shows every soul what it earned, out of itself.
Last comes "they will stay in it long," from the root kh-l-d: an abiding that holds and does not break off, a permanence with confinement folded into it. This stands opposite what the whisperer, al-shayṭān, had held out to Adam before, "a kingdom that does not wear out." Adam wanted a false permanence inside a chance that was already passing, and the Sustainer turned him back toward the return instead. Whoever walks in his father's track and covers the signs does not get the permanence he was made to want on the earth; he gets a real one, in the fire. Whoever seeks to fix a thing outside its own place finds it fixed where he did not want it. The balance struck here opens the scene the Sūra turns to next: the companions of the garden, who attached themselves to the signal, set against the companions of the fire, who covered and called false, the contest the coming verses will set out in detail.
The word precedes the term and the role precedes the identity. In the Book, the one who covers is a role, played by whoever chooses to bury what is sent to him and to announce it false, not an identity of its own fastened onto a particular person, nor a membership in some other creed. The role is what shapes the outcome, and the company of the fire is the effect of the company its owner chose here.
The verse closes the bracket the one before it opened: the counterpart of the one who attached himself to the signal is the one who covered and denied. Covering, from the root k-f-r, is laid over what had already come up: a deliberate work of the hands, the farmer turning the soil onto the seed, one patch after another, not a denial begun from nothing. Because the previous verse guaranteed that the signal would come, the covering here presumes a prior seeing: the one who covers is the one who saw, and then buried. The verse does not stop at that. It adds "and said about them what did not match reality," two stages in sequence, an inner concealing and then a denial declared out to the group in the doubled, intensified form of the verb. The signs themselves, from the root ʾ-y-y, are marks set firm to point at what stands behind them. The outcome is put as company, "the ones who will keep company with the fire," not as those punished in it: companionship, from the root ṣ-ḥ-b, is a lasting and solid bond, something a person shapes inside himself by repeating the act of covering, so that when the covering is lifted on the day of reckoning what shows is what had always been alongside. "They will stay in it long," from the root kh-l-d, is an abiding held inside a space that does not change, an inverted echo of what the whisperer promised Adam, a kingdom that does not wear out: whoever sought permanence out of its place found it where he did not want it. The recompense is structural, not imported: what a person kept company with is what he finds, and the word comes before the term.
