﴾ And so that He might know those who acted hypocritically. It was said to them, 'Come, fight in Allah's path or defend.' They said, 'If we knew of fighting, we would follow you.' That day they were nearer to disbelief than to trust. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and Allah knows best what they conceal. ﴿
The conjunction joins a lām of purpose onto the preceding verse, so that what fell is bound also to the knowing of those who acted hypocritically. The clause of the relative is a past verb that ascribes the act to them. That act, nifāq, from n-f-q, is a containing in which a narrow slit opens and then a channel knots in the depth, so it carries the parting of an outward face from an interior held fast. The word therefore defines its bearers by their act and makes their uncovering a second purpose of the event.
The conjunction brings a past verb built for an unnamed doer, and the preposition presents them as the receivers of the saying. Plural commands then follow one another: come, fight in Allah's path, or defend. Fighting is of the form of mutual action and denotes the facing of two sides; defending, from d-f-ʿ, is a pressure that opens a slit and then shows its effect outward. "Or" keeps the two acts as two stated alternatives: entering the encounter in the path, or pushing back what advances.
Their saying answers the saying directed to them: "If we knew of fighting, we would follow you." "If" opens a condition whose linking is barred, by their own claim, and the object of "we knew" is "fighting," indefinite. Their answer makes their following hang upon this knowledge that they denied; the verse then follows their phrase with a measuring of their nearness and with an uncovering of the gap between the mouth and the heart. The speech itself thus enters the test of what comes after it.
The pronoun opens a nominal judgment, and "to disbelief" and "to trust" both attach to the comparative "nearer." Nearness, from q-r-b, is a knotting that runs toward a settling and then connects to its direction. The comparison places them between two directions and makes their nearness to disbelief weightier than their nearness to trust, while the adverb "that day" confines this measure to the day on which that saying and that reply took place.
The present describes a renewed speech which the preposition has tied to their mouths, and the relative is its object. Its clause denies the presence of the thing said in their hearts, and so sets up an explicit facing between the outside and the inside. The conjunction then resumes with Allah knowing best what they conceal. Concealing, from k-t-m, is a thing held by a fine pressure and kept within an inside that contains it. The comparative makes that knowing the further-reaching one, and the relative gathers under it whatever they held within.
The verse joins the event to the knowing of those whom the act of nifāq has defined, then carries a command to them: fight in Allah's path, or defend. They make their following hang upon a knowledge of fighting that they denied, so the verse places them that day at a relative nearness to disbelief greater than to trust. It goes on to uncover a speech in the mouths that does not dwell in the hearts and closes with Allah's further-reaching knowledge of what they conceal; the outward and the inward come apart before this knowing.
