﴾ So they returned with a blessing from Allah and bounty; no harm touched them, and they followed Allah's approval. Allah is possessor of tremendous bounty. ﴿
The fāʾ follows their preceding speech with a past outcome: they returned. Turning, from q-l-b, denotes a knot that attaches to one face and then connects to another, and the infiʿāl form carries the group's entry into a change and a return. The bāʾ makes a blessing from Allah and a bounty the companions of that return, and "from Allah" preserves the source of the blessing. So the return is concentrated in what it brings back: a group came back, accompanied by a gift from Allah, a gift left wide by the indefiniteness of the blessing and of the bounty.
The past negation falls on an apocopated present verb, whose object is the group's pronoun and whose subject is the indefinite "harm." Touch, from m-s-s, is a drawing together that enters a fine channel, after which the repetition of the s thickens the contact, so it carries a direct arrival at the surface or at the place. Its negation makes the safety complete from the first point of contact: the harm remained outside their place, and the safety itself became part of the blessing that accompanied their return.
The wāw joins a past verb assigned to the same group: they followed. Following, from t-b-ʿ, is a weak grip that lets go of what had gathered and then grips what slipped away and cleaves to it, so it carries a letting-slip followed by catching up and cleaving. The object "Allah's approval" makes that approval the direction of the act, and the annexation reserves it for Allah. The movement, a bodily return, is also a following whose compass is Allah's approval.
The wāw opens, last, a nominal sentence with the name of Allah as subject and "possessor" as predicate, a word that conveys owning and belonging to one alone. Bounty, from f-ḍ-l, is a split that draws in with weight and then extends as an increase toward the one it falls to. It comes indefinite and qualified by "tremendous," and the qualification carries the density of that increase beyond all reckoning. Restating the name of Allah in full joins the source of the blessing to the possessor of the bounty, so the safe return appears as the fruit of a gift from Him, not as the group's sufficiency in its own strength.
The fāʾ shows the outcome of the increase in faith and of the reliance: they returned with a blessing from Allah and bounty. The source of the first and the possessor of the second are plain; between the two the text denies that any harm touched them, and then mentions their own act: they followed Allah's approval. The repetition of bounty keeps its link with the opening and with the close: it accompanied their return first and then appeared, in the last sentence, as a description of what Allah possesses. The safe return and the followed direction meet in one reality: a safety covered over by Allah's bounty, and a movement guided by His approval.
