﴾ Say: Allah has spoken truth. So follow the way of Abraham, inclining upright; he was not among the associators. ﴿
"Say" comes after the demand that the Book be brought and recited, and after the judgment passed on the fabrication that goes on after that. What is said is a short sentence whose agent is Allah: "Allah has spoken truth." Truth, from ṣ-d-q, is a solid holding that stays firm under pressure and then issues in a decisive verdict. The verb is in the past, so it establishes truth as something already realized and complete, and what is said remains a single sentence that gathers the outcome of the whole test into the firmness of Allah's word; a short utterance stands in the place of the long exposition demanded before it.
The connective ties Allah's truth to the command "follow," and the verdict passes from acknowledgment into movement. Following, from t-b-ʿ, has for its frozen nucleus t-b, a weak hold that lets slip what has gathered; the ʿayn then grips what slipped and fuses with it, and the follower catches up with what slipped and cleaves to it. The derived form enters those addressed deliberately into the tracking. Its object is the way of Abraham. Way, from m-l-l, is a gathering that extends while attached to a course, and the repeated final letter doubles the road's attachment until it becomes a way stayed close to.
"Inclining upright" comes as a state of the Abraham named, and so keeps the way from remaining a title with no bearing. Inclining, from ḥ-n-f, is an inward enclosure that issues from within itself toward the outside and then opens a cleft parting from the first direction: a leaning that leaves a swerve behind in order to stand straight in another bearing. The force of a state so placed is that the command to follow the way carries this directed leaning along with it, since the leaning is what described the one whose way it is. Whoever follows the way follows its uprightness, for the state is named in the very sentence that gives the command to follow.
The conjunction adds a sentence denying that Abraham was among the associators. Association, from sh-r-k, is a confining that draws sides together, then runs on unbroken until it meets deep down and enters one of them into another. The causative form in "associators" enters its bearer into producing that partnering, and the active participle makes it a continuing active nature. Yet "he was not," with the partitive preposition, denies Abraham any entry into their kind. In this way the command is held from two sides: a state affirmed, which is the upright inclining, and a limit denied, which is association.
The verse gathers the outcome of the whole proof into "Allah has spoken truth," and the connective then gives that verdict a working effect: following the way of Abraham. The way is held by two descriptions drawn from the verse's own wording, the state "inclining upright" and the denial that the one whose way it is stood among the associators, so the following is bounded in its bearing by what the sentence itself voiced. The movement starts from a truth already firm and becomes a deliberate tracking; it takes its direction from the upright leaning, and the denial of association then keeps it from being turned toward a side that would contradict the description of the one it follows.
﴾ Dis : Allāh a dit vrai.
